Men's Basketball Results for Friday, November 27, 2009
ARIZONA ST 71, LSU 52
NEW YORK(AP) -
- Derek Glasser scored a career-high 24 points, Eric Boateng added 17 and Arizona State used its suffocating zone defense to beat LSU 71-52 on Friday in the consolation game of the NIT Season Tip-Off.
The Sun Devils (4-1) trailed 34-27 at halftime before locking down, forcing the Tigers (3-2) to miss 15 of their first 17 shots out of the break. Tasmin Mitchell and Storm Warren were the only players to score from the field for LSU in the second half until a 3-pointer by Chris Beattle in the closing seconds.
After shooting 60 percent over the first 20 minutes, the Tigers were held to 5 of 25 from the field in the second half. They also turned the ball over 13 times against a 2-3 zone defense that's basically designed to allow offenses to pass it freely around the perimeter.

RICHMOND 63, MISSISSIPPI ST 62
SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas(AP) --
Junior guard Kevin Anderson scored with less than 30 seconds remaining to give Richmond a 63-62 victory over Mississippi State on Friday in the semifinals of the South Padre Island Invitational.
Richmond ran out to a 13-2 lead fueled by strong three-point shooting.
The Spiders hit 6 of 11 from long range in the first half. Two Richmond forwards, junior Justin Harper and senior Ryan Butler, each scored nine points in the half.
But Mississippi State reeled in Richmond later in the first half behind strong shooting from junior guard Ravern Johnson, who had 10 by intermission. The Bulldogs hit a string of five 3-pointers and ended the half trailing 35-32.
The Bulldogs took their first lead with less than eight minutes remaining in the game.
Butler led all scorers with 19 points.

TENNESSEE 86, COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON 69
KNOXVILLE, Tenn.(AP) --
Scotty Hopson scored 21 points and Tyler Smith added 18 to lead No. 9 Tennessee to an 86-69 win over College of Charleston on Friday night.
Charleston (1-3) stayed close by going 10 for 17 from 3-point range, but Tennessee (5-1) went on a 9-0 run to take a 76-61 lead with just under 6 minutes left.
The Volunteers struggled at the free throw line early in the game, going 6 for 13, but they connected on 13 of their next 16 the rest of the way. They also controlled the glass all night, with a 44-24 rebounding advantage over the Cougars.
Donavan Monroe led Charleston with 16 points and Jeremy Simmons added 15.

SOUTH CAROLINA 97, JACKSONVILLE 93
COLUMBIA, S.C.(AP) --
Devan Downey scored 17 of his 34 points in the final 5 1/2 minutes to lead South Carolina over Jacksonville 97-93 on Friday night.
Despite playing for the first time in four years without Dominique Archie, who injured his knee Sunday in a loss to Miami, the Gamecocks (5-1) won the highest-scoring game in Colonial Life Arena's nine-year history.
Travis Cohn gave Jacksonville (0-3) a 75-74 lead before Downey and Brandis Raley-Ross, who had a season-high 18 points, took control. Downey hit two free throws to give South Carolina the lead, then added a layup on the next possession before Raley-Ross hit a free throw.
Downey then hit a jumper, two free throws, and a pull-up 3-pointer to give the Gamecocks an 86-78 lead with just under 2 minutes remaining.
Raley-Ross hit a lay-up before Downey made two more foul shots.
Ben Smith led the Dolphins with 27 points.

GEORGIA 67, JACKSONVILLE ST 64
ATHENS, Ga.(AP) --
Trey Thompkins scored 19 points and Georgia rallied in the second half to defeat Jacksonville State 67-64 Friday.
Jacksonville State (2-3) led by as much as 11 in the first half.
After letting the lead slip away in the second half, the Gamecocks were back on top 57-55 with 2:57 remaining after Trenton Marshall hit a free throw.
But Georgia's Dustin Ware hit his only basket of the game, a 3-pointer with 2:33 left, to put Georgia (3-2) up 58-57.
Thompkins stole the ball on the Gamecocks' next possession, setting up another 3-pointer with 2:00 to go by Ricky McPhee, who contributed 16 points and eight rebounds.
Travis Leslie also scored 16 for the Bulldogs.
Jay-R Strowbridge led Jacksonville State with 16 points.
Strowbridge was at the line for three shots with 1.3 seconds to play, but made only the first two as Georgia rebounded the last miss for the final margin.

EAST TENNESSEE ST 94, ARKANSAS 85
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.(AP) --
Tommmy Hubbard scored a season-high 32 points and East Tennessee State overcame an early deficit to hand Arkansas its second consecutive home loss 94-85 Friday night.
Hubbard led the Buccaneers (3-3) in a sizzling night from behind the arc, hitting five 3-pointers as East Tennessee State nailed 11 of 14 3s as a team.
Arkansas had won 45 consecutive nonconference home games before the recent two-game losing streak and hadn't lost a nonconference game in Bud Walton Arena under third-year coach John Pelphrey before this week.
The Razorbacks (2-3) got 32 points from Rotnei Clarke in the loss, with the sophomore hitting on 10 of 17 3-point attempts while the rest of the team made just 1 of 10 from 3-point range.

FLORIDA STATE, 60 ALABAMA 51
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -
The Alabama Crimson Tide dropped a tough 60-51 decision to the Florida State Seminoles in the second round of the Old Spice Classic on Friday at The Milk House.
Senior Mikhail Torrance and sophomore JaMychal Green both led Alabama with nine points each for the Crimson Tide, which falls to 3-2 on the season. Green also added a game-high eight rebounds before fouling out with 4:45 left in the game.
Florida State was led by Chris Singleton's 14 points and Solomon Alabi, who added ten. The Seminoles improve to 5-1.
"You’ve got to give Florida State credit," Alabama head coach Anthony Grant said. "For a team that’s played their third game in four days, I thought they came out and played with a lot of energy and obviously shot the ball extremely well from the field tonight."
Florida State converted on 46.5 percent of its field goal attempts and a staggering 69.2 percent of its three-point attempts including 6-of-7 in the first half.
Trailing 30-25 at halftime, the Crimson Tide pulled within two at 34-32 on junior Charvez Davis' three-point bucket with 15:43. Alabama, though, would not muster another score for nearly five minutes as Florida State took control of the game with an 11-0 run.
By the time senior Justin Knox knocked down a three-point basket with 10:48 to go, the Seminoles had mounted a double-digit lead. Alabama would pull within seven at 58-51 on junior Chris Hines' basket at the 1:44 mark, but could not cut into the FSU lead any further.
"When you look at the numbers this year, I think Florida State is holding opponents to 30 percent from the field and 25 percent from the three-point line," Grant said. "That’s been their staple, that’s why they’re a good team and Coach Hamilton does a good job with them and they played to their identity tonight."
The Crimson Tide jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the early going and held a 22-17 advantage before a 7-0 Florida State run gave the Seminoles a lead it would not relinquish for the rest of the game. Alabama attempted a season low eight free throws, making five, while FSU got to the line 21 times.
Junior Senario Hillman scored seven points for the Crimson Tide while Knox and senior Anthony Brock each had six.
Alabama will play No. 15 Michigan on Sunday in its final game of the Old Spice Classic. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. (CST). The game will be televised by ESPNU.
