COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- For the second consecutive year, Texas A&M head volleyball coach and former Olympian Laurie Corbelli has been selected to be the head coach of the U.S. Women's Junior National Team, USA Volleyball announced.
"It's a huge honor for me anytime I can represent USA," Corbelli said. "It brings back tons of memories. My heart is just full when I get to stand with others who are representing USA and singing the anthem. It still gives me goosebumps, and I'm just really, really honored and proud."
Corbelli, who has long been associated with USA Volleyball since competing for the U.S. Women's National Team from 1978-84 and having won a silver medal as a member of the 1984 U.S. Olympic Team, led the junior national team to a silver medal at the NORCECA Women's U20 Continental Championship last year in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
"To be chosen to lead the group again is exciting and an awesome opportunity for me," Corbelli said. "I'm always looking for ways to grow as a coach, and being around other coaches and the quality of athletes who advance to the junior national level is an opportunity to learn and grow. I never want to stop learning and getting new ideas and new ways of doing things. I really enjoy doing that and bringing it back to Texas A&M Volleyball."
Corbelli, who is beginning her 25th season as head coach of the Aggies, will coach the 16-player U.S. Women's Junior National Training Team (WJNTT) from July 2-12 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She will take 12 players selected from that group to compete at the 2017 FIVB Volleyball Women's U20 World Championship, July 14-23, in Boca del Rio and Cordoba, Mexico.
The U.S. qualified for the World Championship by winning gold at the 2017 Women's U20 Pan American Cup in San Jose, Costa Rica, last month. Nine players from that team are on the WJNTT.
Blake Rawlins, the head trainer at Top Select Volleyball Academy, will serve as Corbelli's assistant coach, and Tom Pingel, USA Volleyball Senior Director of High Performance and Events, will serve as the team leader.
