Ole Miss downs SFA 3-0 in first round of NIVC

OXFORD, Miss. -- In their quickest match of the year, the Ole Miss volleyball team downed Stephen F. Austin 3-0 in the first round of the Women's National Invitational Volleyball Championship Wednesday at the Gillom Athletics Performance Center to advance to the second round.

The Rebels, who set several more records during the match, needed only 1 hour and 11 minutes to take care of the Ladyjacks and set up a second-round meeting against Arkansas State Thursday at 6 p.m. ASU defeated SIUE 3-1 in the first match of the day.

Ole Miss jumped out to a 9-2 lead early in set one forcing SFA to call its first timeout. The Ladyjacks never got any closer as the Rebels pulled away for a 25-12 win. The Rebels hit .462 and held SFA to .000.

The second set was a little bit closer early on, but the Rebels were able to get a four-point lead late, 19-15, as SFA used its first timeout. The Rebels finished off the set 25-21 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Set three started off in favor off the Rebels as they led 9-5, forcing the Ladyjacks into another early timeout. Ole Miss increased its lead to seven mid-way through the set, and SFA could only get as close as three the rest of the way. The Ladyjacks got to within 20-17, but the Rebels closed out the set on a 5-2 run to end it 25-19 and the match 3-0.

The Rebels will face Arkansas State Thursday at 6 p.m. in the second round in a rematch of their earlier meeting in Jonesboro at the A-State Invitational. The Red Wolves won that match 3-1.
