LSU nominees for McWhorter Award announced

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - John David Moore of the LSU football team and Kelly Quinn of the Tiger volleyball team have been nominated for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship by LSU.

The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship has been presented by the Southeastern Conference since 1986 to the league's top male and female scholar-athletes.

The Southeastern Conference will name the 2018 recipients of the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship on April 26.

JOHN DAVID MOORE, Football, LSU
Major: Architecture

One of the top student-athletes in LSU football history Maintains a 4.0 GPA in architecture and will graduate with Honors from LSU First Team CoSIDA Academic All-America in 2017 Two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District in 2016 and 2017 Four-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll SEC Community Service Member in 2017 Two-time recipient of Charles E. Coates Award, which goes to top scholar-athlete on LSU football team Wore No. 18 in 2017 which is presented to LSU football player that best represents the program - on field, in classroom and in community Three-year starter for the Tigers; 2016 and 2016 at fullback and 2017 at tight end Former walk-on that earned a scholarship after two years with the program Will become the first LSU football player to graduate with a degree in architecture in over 25 years Played in four bowl games during career In 39-game career, caught 19 passes for 127 yards and a pair of scores and rushed eight times for 18 yards. Featured in a video produced by the LSU School of Architecture "Where Passion Becomes Genius" to help promote the school to prospective students

KELLY QUINN, Volleyball, LSU
Major: Biology and Kinesiology-Pre Med

Will graduate in May with two degrees in biology and kinesiology-pre med Maintained a 4.063 cumulative GPA and a 3.99 Science GPA Attended medical school interviews during Fall of 2017 while competing on the volleyball Helped LSU to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since the 2014 season 2016 SEC Service Community Team Two-time All-SEC Academic Honor Roll and SEC First Year Honor Roll Solid defensive specialist for the Tigers, playing in 322 sets of 105 matches in her career Helped the Tigers to two NCAA appearances in her four years at LSU, playing in every set in postseason Totaled 301 digs at 2.98 per set in her junior year which was second on the team and was the squad's libero in a total of 13 matches Ended her career with a total of 522 digs at 1.62 digs per set to along with 36 service aces Did not have a reception error in 55 sets played as a freshman Finished her career with 19 double-digit dig matches Put together a career-high of 26 digs against Virginia on Sept. 2, 2016 Served as volleyball SAAC representative and served in a SAAC leadership position Involved in many community service activities in her four years

Each year, the SEC, in conjunction with AT&T, an SEC official sponsor, provides the league's male and female McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship recipients with a $20,000 post-graduate scholarship. The 26 remaining male and female finalists for the award will also receive a $10,000 post-graduate scholarship.

The award recipients are chosen by a committee of Faculty Athletics Representatives from the 14 SEC institutions and are honored at the SEC Spring Meetings in Sandestin, Fla., in early June.

Last year's McWhorter Award recipients were University of Alabama swimmer Anton McKee and Texas A&M University swimmer Sarah Gibson.
