BATON ROUGE - The sixth-ranked LSU softball team defeated Lamar, 4-1 Wednesday evening at Tiger Park. LSU improves to 25-6 on the year, while Lamar falls to 14-16.

After two scoreless innings, the Tigers put a run on the board in the bottom of the third. The bases were loaded when Amanda Doyle hit a fly ball to center field, scoring Taryn Antoine. With two outs and runners on first and second, Elyse Thornhill hit a two-run double to right field. Amber Serrett singled through the left side on an 0-2 count and Thornhill scored, giving LSU a 4-0 lead going into the fourth inning.

The Cardinals scored one run in the top of the sixth, but the Tigers held off the rest of the Lamar bats. LSU claimed the 4-1 victory after a 1-2-3 seventh inning.

Ali Kilponen secured the game in the circle, pitching five hitless innings before giving up her first hit, and finished with a career-high 12 strikeouts. She improves to 4-1 on the year.

Torina's Thoughts

On getting the team prepared for this game...

"It's not the opponent. It's more of the fatigue and the midweek and shortened week, playing on a Monday. It was an issue today and it shouldn't be. I hate making excuses for them, but I did not think they showed up as well as they could have today."

On Ali Kilponen's performance today...

"She was prepared. She did the work, she's ready to go and we're lucky she was on our team today because she was ready and prepared. She did a really good job. She's worked really hard since Texas A&M, looking for another opportunity and I thought that was a really good bounce back for her and her work has really paid off."

On what they need to be prepared for when they play Georgia...

"Well they're one of the best offenses in the conference without question, year in and year out they are. We saw Amanda Lorenz, one of the best hitters in the country, but they have probably the best power hitter in the conference with DiCarlo. We will have our work cut out for us just like every weekend in the SEC."

Game Notes

Kilponen's 12 strikeouts is a career high. It is also only the second time a Tiger has had ten or more strikeouts on the year. Shelbi Sunseri reached-base streak ended at 30-straight games, the second-longest reached-base streak in three seasons. The Tigers are now 19-3 at home and 2-0 for Wednesday games.

On Deck
