SEC Athletes Named To Verizon Academic All-America Women's At-Large Teams

Thursday, June 13, 2002

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Auburn senior gymnast Sally Cantrell and Tennessee junior crew member Kacey Montgomery, were amongst those named to the 2001-02 Verizon Academic All-America® Women's At-Large Teams, announced today by Verizon and the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Cantrell graduated in December 2001 with a perfect 4.00 GPA in accounting and is currently working on her M.B.A. at Auburn. She is a four-time Academic All-SEC member and a three-time Academic All-America selection.

In 2002 competition, Cantrell won six individual titles, including two all-around titles, and was the first SEC gymnast to score a perfect 10.00 on the balance beam. She suffered a torn ACL after competing in the first nine meets of the season. The Tampa, Fla., native, finished the season ranked eighth in the region on beam (9.845 RQS), ninth in the all-around (38.885) and 15th on bars (9.840).

Montgomery was named a Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association National Scholar-Athlete for the second-straight year, as she owns a perfect G.P.A. of 4.00 in microbiology. Montgomery is also a two-time member of the CRCA All-South Region squad.

Montgomery was a second-team All-South selection by the CRCA and rows from the seventh seat on the starboard side. She became the first Lady Vol to earn back-to-back All-South Region honors after being on the first team last year.

Kentucky senior gymnast Nicole Allen (3.94/Biology) and Alabama senior tennis player Jenny Ketchum (4.00/Biology) were named to the third-team Academic All-America squad.

A complete list of the Verizon Academic All-America Women's At-Large Teams in both divisions is attached.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Verizon Academic All-America program, which was founded by CoSIDA in 1952 to recognize collegiate student-athletes for their outstanding achievements in the classroom and on the playing field. Over the past 50 years, the Verizon Academic All-America program has grown into one of the most recognized and prestigious collegiate scholar-athlete awards nationwide, honoring student-athletes from all NCAA championship sports.

The Verizon Academic All-America Teams are selected by a vote of the 1,800-member CoSIDA. To be eligible, an athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00. Sports information directors nominate eligible athletes from their schools who are named to district teams prior to being voted upon the national level.

"This group of student-athletes typifies the kind of individuals the founders had in mind when the Academic All-America program was formed in 1952. In this, our 50th anniversary year, the members of CoSIDA are proud to play a part in this tremendous program," said Dick Lipe, CoSIDA's Academic All-America chairman.

Under an agreement with CoSIDA, Verizon, formerly GTE, has been the exclusive sponsor of the Academic All-America program since 1985. Verizon, America's literacy champion, strongly believes that literacy is a key ingredient to success and outstanding achievements in life. The Academic All-America program is an integral part of Verizon Reads, the company's national campaign to promote literacy through corporate philanthropy, partner collaboration, community outreach, and customer and employee participation.
