Team Notes

ALABAMA Crimson Tide
Alabama reached the championship game of all of its in-season tournaments capturing a pair of titles including the PNC Wildcat Classic last weekend. The championship was the 34th in UA program history and the 26th under Coach Rick Moody. At 10-3 in its non-SEC schedule this year, Alabama has now posted double-digits regular season non-conference wins in all 13 years of Moody's tenure. Bama opens its SEC schedule on Sunday against Kentucky. The Tide is looking to snap a two game losing streak to the Wildcats.

ARKANSAS Lady Razorbacks
The Lady'Backs closed 2001 at 8-3 with three players in double digits heading into the new year. Arkansas travels to Utah for the first time in women's basketbal to play Brigham Young. Last year, Arkansas downed the Cougars in Fayetteville. However, leading scorer Shameka Christon continues to fight a case of streph throat which slowed her to only six points at TCU. The Lady'Backs have a long travel week to open 2002, continuing on the road after Provo, Utah, to open SEC play at Ole Miss on Sunday, Jan. 6.

AUBURN Tigers
Auburn ended it's non-conference season with a 12-1 record. The Tigers have Thursday off before opening the SEC by hosting Florida at Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum on Sunday. Auburn outrebounded its two opponents (ISU and UTSA) by 85-70, including outrebounding UTSA 41-27. The consolation victory gave the Tigers a 7-2 overall record in California.

FLORIDA Lady Gators
Florida opens its SEC season playing host to Tennessee on Jan. 3 at 6 p.m. This is the first of two meetings this month against the Lady Vols. The Lady Gators then travel to Auburn on Sunday. One week after breaking UF's 22-year old school record for blocks in a game (blocked 9 in the upset win over No. 14/12 Colorado on Dec. 21 to pass the previous mark of eight set by Quientella Bonner on January 22, 1979 against Alabama), sophomore Vanessa Hayden reset the record by swatting 10 against Kent State on Dec. 29 in the championship game of the State Farm Classic. In that victory, Hayden recorded only the second Triple-double in school history, scoring 17 points and 12 rebounds to go along with the 10 blocks.

GEORGIA Lady Bulldogs
Georgia improved to 24-0 all-time against arch-rival Georgia Tech with a 69-52 win in the inaugural Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl ACC/SEC Shootout. The Lady Bulldogs reached the 2002 calendar year with a perfect 10-0 record via an 83-70 win over VCU on Sunday. This season marks only the fourth time Georgia has reached the New Year with an unblemished record (1989-90, 1994-95 and 1999-2000 being the others). The Lady Dogs have equaled their fourth-best start ever, a 10-0 mark in 1985-86. Georgia begins SEC play this week against No. 21 LSU in Athens on Thursday at 7:00 before traveling to Michigan State for a CBS-televised matchup on Saturday.

KENTUCKY Lady Wildcats
Kentucky defeated Southern Mississippi and Lafayette to take home the Blue Sky Restaurant Group Classic Tournament title. Sophomore SeSe Helm was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament after charting team-highs of 17 and 22 points, respecitvely. She has scored in double figures in all 12 games this season. Senior LaTonya McDole was also named to the All-Tournament team, recording 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds versus Southern Miss and 11 points and a team-high six boards against Lafayette. It was McDole's second all-tournament team honor this season. The Cats will open up conference play against Mississippi State in Lexington on Jan. 3.

LSU Lady Tigers
The LSU women's basketball team could not stop the No. 15 Colorado three-point attack as the Lady Buffaloes defeated the Lady Tigers, 86-65, in the second game of the Triple Crown Classic in Lubbock, Texas. The Lady Tigers close out the non-conference schedule at 7-4 and will open Southeastern Conference play on Thursday at Georgia.

OLE MISS Lady Rebels
Ole Miss Falls In Championship Game Of Temple University Classic To Host Owls, 84-69. Sherika Wright was named to the Classic's All-Tournament team after scoring a career-high 21 points in the loss. The same pressure defense Ole Miss used to manhandle Fairleigh Dickinson in the semifinals, came back to haunt the Lady Rebels in the championship game of the Temple University Classic, as the host Owls forced Ole Miss into 23 turnovers on their way to the 84-69 win.

MISSISSIPPI STATE Lady Bulldogs
The Lady Bulldogs, who were down three points at halftime, held a seven-point lead with under a minute remaining but still couldn't stop the Musketeers. Mississippi State (9-4) outshot and outrebounded Xavier (5-7) but still ended up with its second straight loss in the Queen City. The Lady Bulldogs lost to Cincinnati 74-57 on Dec. 29. The Lady Bulldogs hit the road again and start Southeastern Conference action when they face Kentucky on Thursday, Jan. 3, at 7 p.m. EST.

SOUTH CAROLINA Lady Gamecocks
Off to the best start of a season in school history, South Carolina improved its record to 12-1 with two victories last week. On Sunday afternoon, the 17th-ranked Lady Gamecocks held Florida A&M scoreless for the first 14 minutes of the game in racing to a 82-29 victory. Two players contributed double-double performances as Jocelyn Penn lead all scorers with 22 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds in 29 minutes while Shaun Gortman pitched in 16 points and 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. The 29 Florida A&M points set a new South Carolina school record for least points allowed in game and the eight first half FAMU points were the least points in a first half.

TENNESSEE Lady Volunteers
The Lady Vols were at full-strength for the first time this season against Duke on Dec. 27. Pat Summitt has now passed the legendary Hank Iba in career wins. Summitt has 769 and ranks ninth on the all-time career wins list. With the victory over Memphis, UT has now won 22 consecutive games on the road. About 1,800 general admission tickets remain for the showdown between top-ranked Connecticut and second-ranked Tennessee on Jan. 5, 2002, in Knoxville, Tenn. Capacity at the Thompson-Boling Arena is listed as 24,535.

VANDERBILT Commodores
The Vanderbilt Commodores closed out 2001 by scoring a season-high 106 points in a 106-64 victory over Canisius in a New Year's Eve afternoon contest at Memorial Gym. The Commodores were paced by five players in double figures, led by Chantelle Anderson with 27 points. Jillian Danker added 18 points, Zuzi Klimesova scored 16 points, Ashley Earley had 14 points, and Ashley McElhiney had 11 points. The Commodores takes on Penn State at Memorial Gym on January 5 at 11 a.m. (CT).
