FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UA Sports Information) -- Junior Dana Cherry scored 17 points to lead the University of Arkansas Lady Razorback basketball team to an 83-37 victory over Mississippi Valley State on Wednesday evening at Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville.

The win improves the Lady Razorbacks to 15-9 on the season while the Delta Devilettes fall to 1-21.

Holding a five-point lead at the half, Arkansas came out ready to play in the second period opening the half with a 21-6 run over seven minutes. Led by a tough full court press, the Lady Razorbacks converted several Mississippi Valley turnovers into easy buckets and hit their first three pointers of the game during the run.

"We played at their pace in the first half," Cherry said. "We just needed to pick it up to our level in the second half."

Once holding a sizeable advantage, Arkansas began to shuffle players in and out of the contest and built the lead to as many as 47 before the final horn blew. While Cherry led the Arkansas attack in the opening period with 13 points, India Lewis was the Lady Razorbacks big gun with all 15 of her points in the latter period to close out the contest.

As bad as Arkansas played and shot in the first half, it was that much better after the break. Hitting 58 percent of their shots in the second half, the Lady'Backs also nailed four of seven from the three-point arc to add to their lead.

"The score was not as important as the execution of the offense and the defense," head coach Gary Blair said. "In the second half, we played with more intensity and effort."

Opening with a 6-0 run, the Lady Razorbacks looked to have the game well in hand through the first three minutes of the contest. That is when Arkansas' shooting turned ice cold and the Valley was able to tie the game at eight by the 14 minute mark. The Lady'Backs would again regain the lead and go up by as many as 10 in the half, despite shooting a paltry 21 percent from the floor and hitting less shots, six, than Mississippi Valley, nine.

"A lot of times it was hard for us to get into our rotation," Blair said. "It was hard for us to play defense against their offense, and they were hitting shots. We had to get into a rhythm."

The Lady'Backs did manage to out rebound their foe 25-18 in the opening period, and went to the line 21 times, hitting 14 of their free opportunities. The Lady'Backs also missed all seven three point attempts over the opening 20 minutes. Even though Arkansas trailed in almost every statistical category, they still carried a five point, 26-21 lead into the break.

Arkansas had four in double figures led by Cherry's 17. Lewis and freshman Cara Wright each scored 15 while Shameka Christon hit for 10. Mississippi Valley had two in double digits, Tamika Robertson (11) and Tenelia Grays (10). The Lady Razorbacks also picked off 17 Devilette passes and forced 29 turnovers, converting those miscues into 41 points.
