Team Notes

ALABAMA Crimson Tide
The Crimson Tide finished its season with a loss in the WNIT to Michigan State, 61-79. UA defeated Eastern Kentucky 99-77 in the second round on Sunday marking the second highest point output of the year for Bama. The 99 points was also the most scored by the Tide in a WNIT game and the most in a postseason contest since scoring 121 in four overtimes versus Duke in the 1995 NCAA tourney. UA head coach Rick Moody coached his 400th game at Alabama in the Tide's tourney opening contest at Missouri.

ARKANSAS Lady Razorbacks
Arkansas reached the NCAA second round for the second consecutive year with a 20-12 record. Senior point guard Amy Wright put together two of the finest postseason performances in school history with 19 assists against only two turnovers. Wright broke her own season assist record with the effort, closing 2001-02 with 213 assists and her career with 714. Sophomore Shameka Christon backed up her 40-point game in the SEC semifinals with 36 against Clemson, the second-highest NCAA tournament game for a Lady'Back and the second-best back-to-back scoring games in school history. Junior Dana Cherry begins next season with 997 points, a trey shy of becoming the 20th member of the 1,000-point club.

AUBURN Tigers
Auburn won its first SEC Tournament game since 1997 with the victory over Florida in the first round. Auburn posted a 5-10 record against the field of 64 during the season. The Tigers played 11 teams that made the "Big Dance" and defeated Syracuse, Mississippi State, Florida, Southern and South Carolina.

FLORIDA Lady Gators
Head Coach Carol Ross resigned on March 22 after 12 successful seasons at Florida. She steps down as the Lady Gator's all-time winningest coach, compiling a 247-121 record. Senior Brandi McCain is one of 17 senior NCAA Division I players selected for the 2002 Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-Star Challenge, which will be played on March 30 in San Antonio at the UTSA's Convocation Center. She also will participate in ESPN's Slam Dunk and Three-Point Championships, played in Atlanta (site of the men's Final Four) on March 28th, taking part in the Three-Point competition.

GEORGIA Lady Bulldogs
The Lady Bulldogs' season ended with a 68-54 loss to Old Dominion in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Georgia completes the year with a 19-11 record. The Lady Dogs earned their 19th NCAA bid (in 21 editions of the NCAA Tournament). Freshman Kara Braxton scored 12 points in the season finale, the 28th time in 31 games she reached double-figures. Braxton blocked five shots in against ODU to up her season total to 59 and tie Tracy Henderson's UGA freshman record. Tawana McDonald completed her career with a school-record 297 blocks. McDonald's career totals for points (1,225) and rebounds (885) rank No. 16 and No. 5 among Georgia's career leaders. The Lady Dogs will return 11 letterwinners next season. Georgia's recruiting class has been ranked No. 4 in the nation.

KENTUCKY Lady Wildcats
Kentucky finished its season 9-20 overall, 1-13 in the SEC. The Wildcats upset Mississippi State, 75-72, in the first round of the SEC Tournament, marking only the second time in SEC Tournament history that a 12th-seed defeated a fifth seed (Ole Miss defeated Georgia in 1998 in the opening round). UK fell in the second round to fourth seed LSU, 74-62. UK was led in scoring and rebounding throughout the season by sophomore center SeSe Helm. The second team All-SEC selection averaged 17.0 points and 6.7 rebounds a game. Junior point guard Rita Adams, who tied the UK single season record for most steals in a season (104), was the team's second leading scorer with 11.0 points per game.

LSU Lady Tigers
After playing most of the season with only seven or eight players, the Lady Tigers ended their outstanding postseason run with a 69-58 loss to Colorado in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. LSU defeated Santa Clara, 84-78, in the first round to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight season. After leading the SEC in assists and ranking third nationally, sophomore Temeka Johnson earned honorable mention All-America honors by the Associated Press.

In her final post-season contests, the 6-0 forward from Dickson, Tenn., played 28 and 25 minutes, respectively, tallying a combined 19 points and nine rebounds. She played four games after sitting out five due to back surgery; the only games she missed in her four-year career at MSU.

SEC IN 20TH SEASON OF CONFERENCE PLAY
This marked the 20th season of conference play in the SEC. Women's basketball first came under the auspices of the Southeastern Conference for the 1982-83 season. Games played between SEC teams before that time are not counted in the all-time SEC standings, since there was no uniform number of conference games played each season prior to that time.

Since that time, five teams have won the SEC Championship. Tennessee leads with 11 titles, while Georgia is close behind with seven. Auburn has won four titles, with Ole Miss and Kentucky each winning one.

SEC IN THE POLLS

Since the AP poll began in 1983 and the USA Today/ESPN poll in 1986, the SEC has never failed to place at least four members in each of the final polls.

This season, the SEC has had as many as three teams in the AP and USA Today/ESPN Top 10. During the 1996-97, season five league teams graced the AP Top 10 three times.

As many as seven SEC teams have been ranked in the AP poll, and the USA Today/ESPN poll this season. The record for SEC teams ranked is eight. The league did this twice, in the1995-96 season and again during the1996-97 season.

In terms of rankings, the SEC has the richest history of any conference in the nation, boasting more poll appearances than any other. SEC teams have been ranked in the AP poll for 328 consecutive weeks. League teams have been ranked 2,118 times including 1,166 Top 10 appearances and 589 Top Five appearances.

Vanderbilt Wins 2002 SEC Tournament

Chantelle Anderson scored 18 points and Zuzi Klimesova added 16 as No. 6 Vanderbilt beat LSU 63-48 Sunday night in the Southeastern Conference tournament championship for its first title since 1995 and third overall.

The Commodores (27-6) also won the tournament title in 1993 and were runners-up to Georgia last year. They will head into the NCAA tournament having won eight of their last nine. Vanderbilt beat LSU three times this season.

Fourth-seeded LSU (17-11) upset third-ranked Tennessee in the semifinals to reach the championship game for first time since winning its only title in 1991. But the Lady Tigers, dressing only seven players, didn't have enough left against Vanderbilt.

Vanderbilt's Zuzi Klimesova was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Her teammate Chantelle Anderson along with Shameka Christon (Arkansas), Temeka Johnson (LSU) and Kara Lawson (Tennessee) were named to the All-Tournament team.

The 2002 version of the SEC Women's Basketball Tournament proved to be a huge success. The four-day event drew the second largest crowd in tournament history. A total of 41,888 fans came through the turnstiles.

League Title Doesn't Equal Tourney Title...
If history has been any indication, the regular-season conference champion does not necessarily have the inside track to the tournament championship. In the past 16 years (since the regular season title has been awarded), only six conference champions have won the tournament title in the same season. Tennessee has done it four times (1994, 1998, 1999,2000). Georgia did it in 1986 and Auburn followed in 1987.

...But May Mean A Trip To The Final Four
If winning the SEC Tournament title doesn't mean enough, it definately gives foresight into a team's possible success in the NCAA Tournament as eight SEC tournament champions and six SEC tournament runner-ups have advanced to the Final Four. This statement is probably the truest measure of why the SEC is the nation's premier intercollegiate women's basketball conference. In 2000, Tennessee was co-regular season champion, won the SEC Tournament and went on to play in the National Championship game. In 1999, Georgia used it's outstanding regular season and runner-up performance at the SEC tournament to reach it's fifth Final Four. Tennessee used its performance in winning its eighth tournament title in 1998 to propel to the national championship. Arkansas also reached the Final Four in 1998 after losing in the second round of the conference tournament.

In 1995 and '96 Tennessee and Georgia comprised half of the elite field of four. Vanderbilt danced to the Final Four in 1993, after defeating Georgia in the championship game, as did Alabama in 1994, who suffered a semifinal loss to tournament champion Tennessee.

LSU bounced Tennessee in the 1991 finals but the Lady Vols rebounded to claim their third NCAA title. In back-to-back years, 1988 and 1989, Auburn and Tennesee battled in some classic matchups as the Lady Vols defeated the Tigers in the SEC title game in each season and in the 1989 NCAA championship game.

Postseason Notes

SEC Leads In NCAA Tournament Bids
Once again the SEC leads the nation in NCAA Tournament bids. The SEC is the only conference to ever have eight teams receive NCAA bids. This is the second time the league has achieved this feat, the first being in 1999.

The SEC has previously paced the pack 20 times in the 21-year history of the women's tournament. Last year, the Big 12 edged out the SEC and in 2000 the SEC and Big 12 tied.

The SEC leads all other conferences in all-time NCAA Tournament bids with 128. The next closest is the ACC with 88, followed by the Big Ten with 78.

At least six teams from the SEC have reached the NCAA Tournament in 16 of the last 17 tournaments. The league was also the first to have seven teams receive NCAA bids. The league has earned that dubious honor five times overall. Seven SEC teams danced to the postseason in 1986, 1991, 1995, 1996 and 1997.

SEC Tourney Title = Final Four Berth?
Judging from past performancs, winning the SEC Tournament title definitely gives some foresight into success in the NCAA Tournament as six of the past 12 SEC tournament champions have advanced to the Final Four, including Tennessee in 2000. The Lady Vols also did it in 1998 when they won their eighth SEC Tournament Title and their sixth NCAA title.

UT used its performance in winning its seventh tournament title in 1996 to propel to the national championship. Georgia also made a trip to the Final Four that year after losing in the second round of the conference tournament.

Vanderbilt danced to the Final Four in 1993, after defeating Georgia in the SEC Tournament championship game.

Auburn lost to Stanford in the 1990 national championship game after defeating Tennessee in the SEC tournament final.

Tennessee advanced to the Final Four in 1988 and won its third national championship in 1989 after beating Auburn in the SEC Tournament championship game both years. Auburn also advanced to the Final Four in both seasons.

In 1997, Tennessee won its fifth NCAA championship even though the Lady Vols lost to SEC Tournament champion Auburn in the semifinals of the league tournament. In 1995, Tennessee and Georgia comprised half of the elite field of four after Tennessee lost to Vanderbilt in the finals and Georgia fell to those same Commodores in the semifinals of the conference tournament. Alabama represented the SEC in the 1994 Final Four despite losing in the semifinals of the league tournament.

At Every NCAA Tournament
Tennessee and Louisiana Tech are the only two teams in the nation to grace the bracket of every NCAA Tournament since 1982. Georgia has been to 19 of 21 Big Dances. Vanderbilt and Auburn have appeared in 15 of the 21 tournaments, although the Tigers have missed the last two. Ole Miss has made it to 14.

Six Have Made It To Final Four
Six different SEC squads have appeared at the NCAA Final Four since it began in 1982. Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee and Vanderbilt have all made the elite field of four. The ACC has placed five while the Big Ten has placed four.

SEC First With Four In Final Four
In 1996, the SEC became the first conference to have two teams participate in both the women's and men's Final Four in the same season. Georgia and Tennessee women's teams advanced to Charlotte in 1996, while Kentucky and Mississippi State made up half the field of four on the men's side.

The 1996 Final Four marked the second time two SEC women's teams played for the national title. The first happening occurred in 1989 when Tennessee defeated Auburn 76-60 in Tacoma, Wash.

Leader in the Final Four
In the last 12 years (1990-2001), the SEC's 13 Final Four appearances is the most by any conference during that span. The Big East is second with eight while the ACC, Big Ten and Pac-10 are third with six teams each.

The 2001 season was only the second time that the SEC did not have at least one team in the Final Four. The last time that happened was 1992.

Half of the SEC's teams have made it to the Final Four (Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee, Vanderbilt).

Overall, the SEC rules with 23 appearances. The next closest are the ACC and Sun Belt with eight each.

Below is a look at the top conference is the past 13 years.

SEC Leader in National Championships
The SEC's six national championships, all by Tennessee, is tops among all conferences. The Big East now has four, with Connecticut's win in 2002. The Pac-10 is the only other active conference to have more than one with two national championships. The now-defunct Southwest and Western Collegiate Conferences also had two national titles.

SEC Coaches Among Tourney Leaders
Tennessee's Pat Summitt leads all other coaches in tournament appearances with 21, tournament games with 90, most wins with 75, best winning percentage with a .833, most Final Four appearances with 13, most consecutive Final Four appearances with 4 and most National Championships with 6. Georgia's Andy Landers is listed in the leaders for tournament appearances with 19, most games with 55, most wins with 36, best winning percentage with a .666 and most Final Four appearances with 5. Vanderbilt's Jim Foster is listed in the leaders for most appearances with 16 and most games with 40. Alabama's Rick Moody is listed with a .652 winning percentage.

Ten Big Wins
This is the 11th season that the SEC has reached the 10 win plateau during the NCAA Tournament. The 2001 season was the first season since 1993 that the SEC did not amass at least ten wins during the NCAA Tournament. Conference teams have reached that plateau every year since 1989 except 1992, 1993 and 2001.

Only two other conferences can boost of the feat, the ACC (1998 and 1999) and the Big East (2000 and 2001) have both done it twice, while this year marks the first for the Big 12.

One-Point Games
With Vanderbilt's one-point loss to Louisiana Tech in the 2001 Mideast Second Round game, the SEC has been a part of nine one-point games in the NCAA Tournament. SEC teams have won six of those contests.

1992 - Tennessee 91, Southern Cal 90
1986 - LSU 81, Ohio State 80
       Ole Miss 56, Auburn 55
1989 - LSU 54, Purdue 53

1998- Alabama 75, UCLA 74
2000 - Louisiana Tech 66, Vanderbilt 65

SEC Tops in Postseason Bids...Again!
With 18 postseason bids for men's and women's basketball, the SEC once again leads the nation in postseason appearances in the NCAA and NIT tournaments. The SEC set the record with 19 bids in 1999 and again last season. This marks the seventh time in the last eight years the SEC has been at the top among the conferences in postseason bids. Both the SEC men's teams and women's teams garnered 9 bids each this season (Men's - 6 NCAA, 3 NIT; Women's - 8 NCAA, 1 WNIT).

WNIT Tournament
Since the WNIT came into existence four years ago, the SEC has had at least one team represent them. This year, Alabama made it through to the third round. The Crimson Tide defeated Missouri and Eastern Kentucky before being defeated at Michigan State.

LSU and Mississippi State were invited to compete in the inaugural WNIT. The tournament featured 16 teams in a single elimination format with every round played at a home site of a participating school. LSU hosted the first two rounds and won games over Boise State and Butler before traveling to Baylor for the semifinal round. The Lady Tigers fell to the Lady Bears 66-61.

Mississippi State opened the tournament at Baylor and suffered a 75-65 loss. The postseason appearance was only the second in school history, other than the SEC Tournament, for MSU. Penn State captured the first WNIT championship in a 59-56 win over Baylor.

In 1999, Arkansas defeated Wisconsin 76-64 to claim the Women's NIT championship. The attendance of 14,161 set an Arkansas state record for a women's sporting event and came just three days after the Lady Razorbacks drew 9,041 in a semifinal victory over Drake.

The 2000 tournament saw another SEC team in the finals. Wisconsin defeated Florida 75-74 in that game. Florida played four of its five WNIT games on the road.

Last season, three SEC teams participated. Mississippi State made it to the semifinals with wins over Georgia Tech (77-73) and Illinois (86-77). James Madison finally stopped their run with a 63-61 win over MSU. Alabama went 1-1 in the tournament with a win over Memphis (77-67) and a loss to UAB (72-84). Ole Miss made their first WNIT appearance with a 92-95 loss to Western Kentucky.
