    Vanderbilt 63, Oakland 38

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- All-American Chantelle Anderson scored 28 points and top-seeded Vanderbilt used its height advantage in beating No. 16 seed Oakland 63-38 Saturday night in the opening round of the Midwest Regional.

The Commodores (28-6) won their sixth straight game and ninth in their last 10. They will play ninth-seeded Arizona State, a 73-70 winner over Wisconsin, on Monday night in the second round.

Oakland (17-14) was making its first appearance in the NCAA tournament after winning the Mid-Continent Conference tournament title and an automatic bid in just its third year as a Division I program.

The Golden Grizzlies thought they were ready for the postseason after a schedule that included four teams in the NCAA tournament. But they found themselves in a mismatch against the Southeastern Conference tournament champs.

Oakland had only three players at 6-foot and only one at 6-1 compared to the Commodores, five of whom are 6-1 or taller.

Anderson had a five-inch advantage at 6-6, and she grabbed 13 rebounds in helping Vandy outrebound Oakland 40-23. Ashley McElhiney added 12 points.

The Golden Grizzlies did lead Vanderbilt once _ when Sarah Judd scored the first basket of the game.

The Commodores scored the next 12 in taking control of the game for good. McElhiney scored seven of the first 17 for Vanderbilt, including five straight that gave the Commodores a double-digit lead they never relinquished.

Oakland made one run, scoring the last six points of the first half to pull within 30-17 at halftime. Katie Wolfe opened the second with a 3-pointer that made it 30-20. McElhiney started Vandy on a quick 6-0 spurt. Wolfe hit another bucket to make it 35-26.

The Golden Grizzlies never got closer than 16 the rest of the game as Vandy led by as much as 25 in the final minutes.

Wolfe finished with 16 points for Oakland, and Judd had 14.

    Old Dominion 68, Georgia 54

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) -- Lucienne Berthieu scored 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds Saturday, leading Old Dominion past Georgia 68-54 for a spot in the second round of the women's Mideast Regional.

Monique Coker added 13 points for the Lady Monarchs (26-5), who rallied from a nine-point deficit midway through the first half.

A layup by Coker late in the second half started an 11-4 run that gave Old Dominion a 56-50 lead. The Lady Monarchs pushed the lead to nine before a 3-pointer by Mary Beth Lycett pulled Georgia to 60-54 with 3:05 remaining.

Coker answered with a 3-point play and a basket by Sharron Francis gave the Lady Monarchs their first double-digit lead.

Berthieu scored 20 points in the first half and made 10 of 12 free throws. She slumped in the second, scoring only one field goal and going 2-for-7 from the line.

Georgia (19-11) made 12 of its first 20 shots but went only 9-for-28 the rest of the game. The Bulldogs lost the lead and went into halftime tied at 35.

Christi Thomas led the Bulldogs 14 points and Kara Braxton had 12 before fouling out with 4:59 left. Georgia was 7-for-16 from the foul line.

Georgia held a four-point lead early in the second, but the Lady Monarchs pulled away.

Old Dominion and Georgia have played in 19 tournaments. The only schools with more appearances are Louisiana Tech and Tennessee with 21.

This was only the second meeting in the tournament between the teams. The Lady Monarchs defeated Georgia in the 1985 NCAA championship game.

    BYU 90, Florida 52

AMES, Iowa (AP) -- Erin Thorn made seven 3-pointers and scored 28 points, and Jennifer Leitner added 17 points and 17 rebounds as Brigham Young beat Florida 90-52 Saturday night in the Midwest Regional.

Eleventh-seeded BYU (23-8) raced to an early 20-point lead with crisp passing and sharp shooting and won for the first time in five NCAA tournament games. The Cougars will play Iowa State or Temple in the second round Monday night.

Sixth-seeded Florida (18-11) missed 25 of its first 29 shots and suffered its worst loss in nine NCAA tournament appearances. Its biggest loss previously: 69-55 to Virginia in 1993.

The Lady Gators forced up quick shots and that played right into BYU's hands. The Cougars worked the ball with precision and got wide open shots as a result, shooting 58 percent in the second half and 50 percent for the game.

Florida was 5-for-33 in the first half and shot 25.7 percent (18-of-70) overall.

Thorn was 7-for-11 from 3-point range and 10-of-16 overall. The seven 3s matched the second most in an NCAA tournament game. Freshman Danielle Cheesman added 13 points for BYU and outplayed Florida's 6-foot-4 center, Vanessa Hayden.

Hayden, double-teamed whenever she got the ball, scored a season-low four points and grabbed eight rebounds before fouling out with 3:39 left. She had been averaging 17.6 points and 12 rebounds.

Only Brandi McCain, with 28 points, got untracked offensively for Florida. From the 10-minute mark in the first half until 13:43 remained, McCain was the only Florida player to score, getting 14 points in that stretch.

Thorn hit a jump shot 45 seconds into the game and BYU, which won the Mountain West Conference tournament, was on its way.

She hit two 3-pointers and Leitner scored seven points in a 15-1 run that gave the Cougars a 28-8 lead. A 9-0 run that included two 3s by Thorn made it 37-14, and BYU scored the first 11 points of the second half to go up 50-18.

    South Carolina 69, Liberty 61

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Third-seeded South Carolina hit four late free throws and held off a late rally to beat Liberty 69-61 on Saturday night in the NCAA tournament's East Regional.

The Lady Gamecocks, who lost three of their last four coming into the tournament, led 62-47 with 6:30 to go before No. 14 Liberty made one last run.

The Lady Flames, making their sixth straight tournament appearance without a win, outscored South Carolina 14-3 over 4 1/2 minutes and had the ball down 65-61 with less than two minutes to go.

But Kristal Tharp's short jumper rolled off the rim, ending Liberty's chance to become the first No. 14 seed to win a game in the women's tournament.

Liberty's closest tournament game before Saturday was a 21-point loss to Georgia in 1999.

South Carolina's Petra Ujhelyi scored 19 points, just one off her career high. She added 11 rebounds. Jocelyn Penn had 13 points and got 14 rebounds.

Stephanie Walker led the Lady Flames with 19 points. Susan Foreid had nine points and nine rebounds, and Tharp had nine points and eight rebounds for Liberty.

South Carolina will take on No. 6 seed Cincinnati in the second round Monday. The Bearcats beat St. Peter's 76-63 in overtime in Saturday's first game.
