Team-By-Team Notes

ALABAMA Crimson Tide
Alabama begins its 29th year of women's basketball on Nov. 22 against Samford. The Tide is scheduled to play a pair of exhibition games on Nov. 12 and Nov. 17. The Crimson Tide is coming off its 13th consecutive winning season and its 11th straight season to reach postseason play. Bama head coach Rick Moody, is the winningest basketball coach in Alabama hoops history (men's or women's) entering the 2002-03 season with a career record of 272-130. The Tide finished last season ranked 4th in the nation last year for 3-point shooting and returns nearly all of the same shooting corps for this season. Senior Beth Vice leads the "Long Rangers" having finished 11th in the country last year for 3-point shooting and 16th for 3-pt made.

ARKANSAS Lady Razorbacks
Preseason action continues for the Lady Razorbacks as Arkansas hosts Mike White's All-Stars Nov. 14 at 7:00 p.m. The Lady Razorbacks face off against Arkansas alumnae Amy Wright and Wendi Wilits and other WNBA players. Arkansas hosts Athletes In Action Nov. 19 in the final pre-season contest. The Lady Razorbacks open the 2002-03 regular season hosting Stephen F. Austin Saturday, Nov. 23, at 7:00 p.m.

AUBURN Tigers
Auburn returns three starters from the 2001-02 season including junior Le'Coe Willingham, senior LaKeisha Johnson and sophomore guard Natasha Brackett. Also returning to the lineup is junior Tia Miller, who sat out the second half of last season due to an injury. Newcomers Mandisa Stevenson , Dani Kubic and Marita Payne should also be immediate contributors to the team. Head coach Joe Ciampi, entering his 24th season at Auburn, believes that a strong defense as well as team chemistry are the top keys to the 2002-03 Tigers' success.

FLORIDA Gators
Nine of UF's 12 scholarship players have one year or less of college basketball experience at any level. Seniors Courtney Cooper & Trish Patterson both joined UF from Miami-Dade Community College and have just one year of Division I experience under their belt. Junior Vanessa Hayden is the lone Gator with more than one year of Division I experience. For the first time in 13 years, the Gators take the court under a new head coach. Carolyn Peck was introduced on April 3, 2002, as the eighth women's basketball head coach in Florida history. One of the first changes made by new head coach Carolyn Peck was to eliminate the nickname "Lady Gators." The team now prefers to be known as 'Gators.'

GEORGIA Lady Bulldogs
The Lady Bulldogs will open the season at No. 9 in both the pre-season AP and ESPN/USA Today polls. The Lady Bulldogs return three starters from last year's NCAA Tournament team -- Mary Beth Lycett, Christi Thomas and Kara Braxton. Kara Braxton was named first-team pre-season All-SEC at the league's media day.

KENTUCKY Wildcats
Kentucky will begin its 29th season of varsity basketball on Tuesday, Nov. 12 against Basketball Travelers. The Wildcats return four starters from last season, including All-SEC candidates SeSe Helm and Rita Adams. The Cats will face the country's fifth toughest schedule this season and will participate in regular season tournaments in Seattle, Wash., and Honolulu, Hawaii.

LSU Lady Tigers
LSU's No. 3 ranking in the AP poll is the highest ranking for the Lady Tigers since the final poll of the 1977-78 season (No. 2). Aiysha Smith and Temeka Johnson are candidates for the Naismith Player of the Year. Smith and Johnson were also named by ESPN.com as one of the top five players in the country at their position. The Lady Tigers open exhibition play Friday against Basketball Travelers and wrap it up on Nov. 14 against the Houston Jaguars.

OLE MISS Lady Rebels
Sophomore guard Elizabeth Cansdale led five Ole Miss players in double figures with 16 points as the Lady Rebels defeated West Alabama, 94-57, in their first exhibition game of the 2002-03 season. Ole Miss will return to action on Thursday, Nov. 14 when they host the Basketball Travelers in their second and final exhibition game. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in Tad Smith Coliseum. The Lady Rebels will host Southern University in their home-opener on Monday, Nov. 25 at 7 p.m. in Tad Smith Coliseum.

MISSISSIPPI STATE Lady Bulldogs
LaToya Thomas has been tabbed a Naismith Player of the Year candidate for the third straight year. In addition, she was just named a preseason AP All-American. Tan White has been named a preseason All-American by WomensCollegeHoops.com and Basketball Times. The 2002-03 season tips off on Nov. 15 when MSU hosts the first round of the WNIT versus South Alabama at 7 p.m. This will mark the first time women's basketball has hosted a preseason WNIT game.

SOUTH CAROLINA Lady Gamecocks
The Gamecocks return three starters from last season¹s Elite Eight squad with four additional letterwinners. Seniors Jocelyn Penn and Petra Ujhleyi and junior Kelly Morrone are expected to lead USC this season as the team fights to earn a return trip to the NCAA Tournament. On Sunday, November 17th, the Gamecocks battle Stockholm in the last exhibition game and the last basketball game in the Carolina Coliseum. Game time is 2:00 p.m.

TENNESSEE Lady Volunteers
Gwen Jackson scored 22 of her career-high 29 points in the second half Sunday to help No. 2 Tennessee open its season with a 94-68 win over No. 22 Oklahoma, last year's NCAA runner-up. The Lady Vols play Premier Players in an exhibition game on Nov. 16, then continue the regular season on Nov. 24 against Duke in the Jimmy V Classic.

VANDERBILT Commodores
The Commodores start the Melanie Balcomb era Nov. 23 at Boston University. Balcomb replaces Jim Foster who took the head coaching job at Ohio State. Balcomb comes to Vanderbilt after spending seven years at Xavier University compiling a 135-78 record. Balcomb's staff includes assistant coaches Vicky Picott, Kristin Schneider and Stephanie Norman. Chantelle Anderson is 580 points shy of setting the Vanderbilt All-Time Scoring mark for men or women.
