Thursday, January 10, 2002

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Chantelle Anderson had 33 points and 10 rebounds, and fell one short of her career best with five blocked shots while leading No. 8 Vanderbilt to a 71-54 victory Thursday night over Kentucky.

Vanderbilt (15-3, 1-1 SEC) led 19-5 six minutes into the game after a 3-pointer by Jillian Danker.

In three games against Kentucky, Anderson is averaging 28.3 points. She scored 32 in a 91-61 victory last season. Zuzi Klimesova added 18 points for Vanderbilt.

Kentucky (8-7, 1-2), led by SeSe Helm's 14 points, pulled within 12 early in the second half, but Anderson slowed the rally with a 3-point play with 16:20 left that made it 47-32. Five minutes later, Anderson added her second 3 to extend the lead to 58-34.

Vanderbilt has won 12 of the last 13 games against the Wildcats, losing three years ago in Lexington, and has not lost to Kentucky in Nashville since a 79-70 decision during the 1985-86 season.

With the loss, Kentucky missed a chance to go over .500 in league play for the first time since beginning the 1999-00 conference schedule with back-to-back wins over Auburn and Florida.

The Commodores were ahead by as many as 18 points before taking a 41-28 lead at halftime.

Keiko Tate added 12 points for the Wildcats.

No. 2 Tennessee 71, No. 19 Auburn 50
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) --
Michelle Snow scored 18 points, and Gwen Jackson added 11 Thursday night as second-ranked Tennessee beat No. 19 Auburn 71-50.

The Lady Vols (13-1, 2-0 Southeastern Conference), who have beaten Auburn five straight times, never trailed and led by as many as 23 points in the first half even though they didn't shoot the ball very well and were outrebounded 47-35 for the game.

At 6-foot-5, Snow often used her height over Auburn's smaller players to her advantage.

The Tigers (12-3, 0-2) just couldn't get enough shots to fall and finished 19-of-62 from the floor. They also were just 10-of-20 from the foul line.

Tia Miller, who had to sit much of the second half with four fouls and limped off the court with an injury to her left knee with 1:54 left, scored 15 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for Auburn. Nancy Derrick added 10 points for the Tigers.

After Miller's basket tied it at 6, the Tigers fell behind for good. The Lady Vols went on a 13-0 run capped by Ashley Robinson's shot with 10:31 left in the first half to increase their lead to 19-6.

Tennessee continued to pull away and led by 23 points after Shalon Pillow's jumper with 37.6 seconds to go before halftime.

The Lady Vols' defense waned some in the second half and Tennessee coach Pat Summitt didn't like it.

Derrick had an easy layup to cut the lead to 49-30 with 13:53 remaining, and Summitt called timeout. But Auburn continued to chip away and had a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 52-38 with 9:47 left.

That was as close as the Tigers got the rest of the way.

No. 9 South Carolina 71, No. 15 Georgia 64
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) --
Tatyana Troina's six 3-pointers helped her score 22 as she led ninth-ranked South Carolina to a 71-64 victory Thursday night over No. 15 Georgia -- the first win in 10 tries in Athens for the Lady Gamecocks.

The win was the third straight Southeastern Conference victory for South Carolina (15-1, 3-0), another first. The loss ended an eight-game winning streak in the series by Georgia (12-2, 1-1).

Kara Braxton led Georgia with 18 points, but the Lady Bulldogs committed 27 turnovers.

Troina hit 6-of-13 3-pointers, and every one seemed to come when most needed. But with 5:55 to play, Mary Beth Lycett, who scored 14 points, hit her fourth and final 3-pointer to pull Georgia within 60-59.

Two layups by Petra Ujhelyi then sparked South Carolina to a 67-60 lead with 3:10 to play. Shaunzinski Gortman added 15 points for South Carolina, which last beat Georgia in 1993 in Columbia.

Georgia, which won by 37 points when the teams met last season, leads the series 19-3.

The Lady Bulldogs took a 14-6 lead after Nikki Eason's 3-pointer with 14:40 to play in the first half. But the Lady Gamecocks went on a 23-3 surge, forcing nine turnovers in the process.

Meanwhile, South Carolina got inside production from Gortman with three baskets and outside scoring from Troina. She had two of her three first-half 3-pointers during the surge.

South Carolina's biggest lead was 29-17 after Jocelyn Penn's fastbreak layup with 6:47 to play. Braxton and Lycett sparked a mini-comeback for Georgia, which trailed 39-31 at the half after Eason's buzzer-beating 3-pointer.

BATON ROUGE, La. (Florida Sports Information) --

Brandi McCain, who entered the game averaging 16.1 points, managed just two points in the loss and saw her consecutive-games streak of scoring a 3-point field goal end at 30 games.

Florida shot just 30.9 percent from the floor during the game, while LSU shot a steady 45.3 percent.

The Lady Gators did get LSU's lead down to 15 (46-28) in the opening stages of the second half, but the Lady Tigers answered with an 8-0 run to balloon their advantage back to 23 points (54-28) with 14:34 remaining in the game.

Foul trouble plagued the Lady Gators all evening and LSU took advantage. Tishona Gregory, UF's starting point guard, fouled out of the game with 12:49 remaining. McCain picked up her fourth personal with 14:34 to go, Monique Cardenas collected her third at the 13:32 mark of the second period, while Hayden recorded her third personal at the 4:17 mark of the first half.

LSU shot 46.7 percent (14-of-30) in the first half, with all six players who saw action got on the scoreboard.

Mississippi State 82, Mississippi 57
STARKVILLE, Miss. (MSU Sports Information) --
Mississippi State stormed out to a 15-0 start over visiting Mississippi on its way to an 82-57 victory at Humphrey Coliseum in front of 3,023, the second largest crowd in school history and the largest since Tennessee visited "The Hump" during the 2000 campaign.

Freshman Tan White had nine of her 25 in that 15-0 run for the Lady Bulldogs. She scored 15 in the first half. White recorded her fifth double-double of the year, with a career-high 16 rebounds, she also dished out seven assists.

"I was very pleased with the start," said Sharon Fanning. "I thought that was very important."

MSU (11-5, 2-1 SEC) led 40-28 at the break, behind hot shooting from the field (50 percent). The Lady Bulldogs would finish the night shooting 53 percent from the floor.

In the second half the Lady Rebels cut the State lead down to just six points 42-36 at the 16:54 mark of the second period, but the Maroon and White stretched the lead out to 20 points with a 20-3 scoring spurt.

"It looked like we were intimidated," said UM head coach Ron Aldy. The most disappointing thing about tonight is that we didn't compete with toughness."

MSU put three more starters in double figures in the scoring column led by LaToya Thomas, who tallied her sixth double-double of the season with her 20 points and 10 boards. Thomas left the game with 2:25 on the clock when she hit the floor, banging her head on the way down. She received five stitches above her right eye and is anticipated to continue practicing and playing this week.

Sophomore guard Jessica Carter made her first career start in the Maroon and White and contributed 11 points, while lone senior Jennifer Fambrough also poured in 11.

The 25-point win was the largest over Mississippi in school history just beating the previous high of 24 points when MSU defeated UM 82-58 on Jan. 13, 2000, in Starkville.

Mississippi was led by Amber Wright and Sherika Wright who both had nine points. The Lady Rebels shot just 28 percent from the field.
