No. 23 South Carolina 99, Wofford 46

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Jocelyn Penn tied a school record with 50 points, nearly all of them on layups, as No. 23 South Carolina beat Wofford 99-46 Wednesday night.

But Penn needed help to tie the record.

She had 46 points with less than a minute to go when the Gamecocks (6-0) pressed and fouled so the senior could have a chance at tying Shannon Johnson's record set in January 1996.

The last foul came with six seconds left, and after Wofford (1-4) hit both free throws, South Carolina rushed the ball upcourt to get it into Penn's hands. She tried a short turnaround jumper to break the record, but it rolled off the rim as the crowd of 525 who braved an ice storm to watch the game groaned.

Penn made 22 of 28 shots -- breaking Johnson's record of 19 baskets -- and six of seven free throws goals.

Petra Ujheyli added 16 points and 15 rebounds, while Kelly Morrone had 10 points and 11 assists for the Gamecocks.

Wofford was led by Brie Bradshaw with 14 points.

South Carolina shot 57.5 percent (42-of-73), while Wofford shot 31 percent (18-of-58). The Gamecocks outrebounded the Terriers 47-26.

South Carolina jumped on Wofford early, scoring on its first seven possessions, and led 20-3 after the first six minutes, hitting nine of 12 shots.

During the same stretch, the Terriers made just one of six shots and turned over the ball six times.

South Carolina's biggest lead -- 55 points at 99-44 -- came with 31 seconds to go.

And when Penn hit her 38th point on a steal and layup to put the Gamecocks up 85-36 with 7:20 to go, some of the crowd chanted "Penn's up by two!"

No. 4 Tennessee 60, No. 15 Louisiana Tech 35
RUSTON, La. (AP) --
Fourth-ranked Tennessee held No. 15 Louisiana Tech to a program low for points scored, and Gwen Jackson and Tasha Butts had 12 points apiece as the Vols beat the Techsters 60-35 Wednesday night.

Tennessee (6-1) handed Louisiana Tech (2-2) its first loss at home in 22 games. Trina Frierson had 12 points for Louisiana Tech -- whose previous low was 44 points in the 1986-87 season.

It was the home debut for Kurt Budke, who this season replaced Leon Barmore as the Techsters' coach.

Tech's worst previous loss at home was Tennessee's 19-point victory in 1998-99.

The Volunteers held the Techsters to 20-percent shooting. Tech made only 1-of-9 from 3-point range and was outrebounded 55-36.

Tennessee shot only 40 percent, but made six of 13 3-pointers. Kara Lawson and Shana Zolman added 11 points each for the Vols, and Ashley Robinson grabbed 12 rebounds.

Amisha Carter added 10 points for Louisiana Tech, which trailed 41-14 at halftime.

The Techsters, who have eight new players, including five freshmen, immediately showed their youth against the Vols. The Techsters shot only 15 percent in the first half (6-of-39) and missed all six of their free throws.

Even the experienced Tech players had trouble against Tennessee. Cheryl Ford, the Western Athletic Conference player of the year last season, was just 1-of-9 from the field. She had seven rebounds.

Tech and Tennessee are the winningest teams in women's college basketball, and the only two teams to participate in all 21 NCAA tournaments.

The Techster program is 296-18 at home, but Louisiana Tech hasn't beaten Tennessee in Ruston since the 1996-97 season.

No. 20 Mississippi State 79, Memphis 63
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) --
LaToya Thomas scored 15 of her 25 points in the second half, and No. 20 Mississippi State beat Memphis 79-63 Wednesday night.

Thomas moved out outside rather than posting up in the second half and drove inside for the Lady Bulldogs (5-1). Memphis (4-1), which got 25 points from Shannon Hamp, drew no closer than nine after the Lady Bulldogs made their run.

Mississippi State led by as many as 22 points in the final six minutes.

Thomas was 8-of-12 from the field and hit her only 3-point shot. Tan White added 17 points and nine rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs.

Shannon Hamp was 12-of-17 for Memphis, which got 11 points from reserve Victoria Crawford.

Mississippi State led 39-27 at the half, scoring the last seven points before the break. Mississippi State shot 54 percent for the game to 44 percent for Memphis.

Evansville 70, Kentucky 66
EVANSVILLE, Ind. --
With 14 seconds remaining and Kentucky trailing 68-66, freshman Jennifer Pfeiffer's 3-point attempt failed and Evansville held on to upset Kentucky, 70-66, on Wednesday at Roberts Stadium. Sophomore Sara Potts tied her career-high 21 points while Rita Adams and Pfeiffer added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

After seven ties and five lead changes in the second half, the Purple Aces (2-2) took a 66-61 lead with 1:22 to go. The Wildcats (2-2) continued to hang around, forcing the Purple Aces to foul. SeSe Helm hit one of two from the charity stripe and Pfeiffer, fouled on a three-point attempt, nailed two of the three to pull UK back within two, 68-66, with 21 second left in regulation. The scrappy Cats then grabbed the offensive rebound from Pfeiffer's free-throw miss and called timeout to set up the inbounds play. Pfeiffer's running 3-point attempt with time running down bounced off the front of the rim. UK was forced to foul and Evansville pulled out victory.

"We had a chance to win the game our shot just didn't fall," UK Coach Bernadette Mattox said. "We have to bounce back from this and get ready for Western Kentucky on Saturday."

The Purple Aces, who defeated Kentucky last season in Lexington 78-72, exploded from the start of the game, building a 19-5 lead by the 11:38 mark. Guard Alissa Krirby knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers followed by another one from freshman guard Cammie Campell to extend the Evansville lead.

The Cats' comeback began with less than eight minutes remaining in the half when Potts nailed one of her four 3-pointers with 7:43 to go in the half. Pfeiffer then converted a four-point play followed by a layup by Helm to pull UK within four, 19-15, with 4:46 to go. Adams then scored four consecutive points to tie the game with 2 minutes left. The teams traded baskets and went into the locker room knotted at 25 apiece. UK shot a dismal 26.5 percent in the first stanza while Evansville shot 30 percent.

Four Evansville players scored in double-figures led by Megan Liffick's 19 points. Jamie Gray notched a double-double with 18 points and 10 boards while Kirby and Campbell followed with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Evansville hit 23 of 34 free throws in the game compared to UK's 16 of 23. UK ended the game shooting 36.1 from the floor while Evansville shot 35.7 percent. UK was outrebounded 43-31.

Evansville leads the series with Kentucky, 2-0.

Potts has hit at least four 3-pointers in three of the last four games.

UK returns to Lexington on Saturday, Dec. 7, when it plays host to intrastate rival Western Kentucky at 7 p.m. ET in Memorial Coliseum.
