SEC Player of the Week
Monique Cardenas, Florida

  • Senior Monique Cardenas led the Lady Gators to a pair of upset wins last week, averaging 17.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game.

  • Played a stellar defensive game in the win at No. 6 Vanderbilt, where Florida held the Commodores - which led the nation in field goal percentage -- to just a 25.0 percent shooting effort in the second half en route to the win.

  • Cardenas collected four steals in the win and made several deflections. The victory was Vanderbilt's first loss at home this season, and Florida's first in Memorial Gym since 1998.

  • Cardenas is Florida's scoring leader in SEC games this season, averaging 15.7 points, while her overall all-games average stands at 10.9 per game.

    Team Notes

    ALABAMA Crimson Tide
Tide ran winning streak versus arch rival Auburn to four straight with upset win on Thursday. Win over nationally-ranked Tigers marked 11th consecutive season that UA has defeated a ranked foe. Bama's win at Kentucky was the Tide's first since the 1994-95 season. The Crimson Tide will have the week off before hosting Arkansas on Feb. 3 on Fox Sports Net. Coach Rick Moody needs just one victory to tie former Tide men's basketball coach Wimp Sanderson as the all-time winningest basketball coach in Alabama history.

    ARKANSAS Lady Razorbacks
Arkansas snaps its conference slide with the largest regular season win over a top 25 team in school history with a 28-point victory over No. 7 South Carolina. Juniors India Lewis and Dana Cherry had 17 each while sophomore Shameka Christon had 13. Christon had a career high 28 against Miss State in the Lady'Backs overtime loss last week. The Lady'Backs host #6 Vanderbilt on Thursday for the first-ever back-to-back top 10 home games for Arkansas. Defense was the difference as Arkansas held USC to 20% in the second half, forced 16 consecutive missed field goals and held the Lady Gamecocks to no players in double figures.

    AUBURN Tigers
Auburn played in front for the third-largest women's crowd in Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum history when 6,614 showed up for Sunday's game with No. 2 Tennessee. The crowd was the largest since 1993 for the Tigers. Auburn failed to snap two streaks during the week with a loss at Alabama and a loss to Tennessee. The Tigers have now lost five straight to the Crimson Tide and six straight to the Lady Vols. Freshman Natasha Brackett earned her first career start on Sunday against Tennessee, scoring 13 points and dishing out four assists. The Tigers will try to get back on track this week when they host Mississippi on Thursday and are at Mississippi State on Sunday.

    FLORIDA Lady Gators
Florida recorded a pair of upset victories last week, topping No. 6 Vanderbilt in Nashville and No. 16 Georgia in Gainesville. The Lady Gators are 4-2 this season against ranked opponents, with three of those wins coming over higher-ranked foes. UF is in the mist of a four-game stretch against ranked teams, playing at No. 2 Tennessee on Thursday before hosting No. 7 South Carolina on Sunday. Florida is 4-4 all-time playing on Super Bowl Sunday, winning all four played at home. The Lady Gators have a three-game win streak on Super Bowl Sunday, defeating USC in the previous two meetings.

    GEORGIA Lady Bulldogs
The first- and second-half performances of the Lady Bulldogs in their last four games have been dramtically different. Georgia has connected on just 30-of-105 (.286) of its first-half field goals and averaged 21.0 points in the first half of those games before returning from the locker room to connect on 63-of-105 (.600) of its second-half shots and average 41.5 points. Freshman Kara Braxton has now reached double-figures in points in 18 of 19 games and leads the Lady Dogs in scoring, rebounding, blocks, steals and minutes played. Georgia hosts Mississippi State on Thursday in a CSS-televised game and then travels to Kentucky for a Sunday date with the Wildcats. The Lady Dogs lead their series with State, 16-8, including an 8-2 record in Athens. Georgia is 21-3 all-time against Kentucky, but just 7-6 in Lexington.

    KENTUCKY Lady Wildcats
Kentucky looks to snap a six-game losing streak after dropping its two conference games at home last week. The Cats, who fell to LSU on Thursday and Alabama on Sunday, take a much needed break before playing host to nationally-ranked Georgia next Sunday. Sophomore Shambrica Jones charted a career-high 15 points and seven rebounds against the Lady Tigers while senior LaTonya McDole came out of a six-game scoring slump to lead the Cats with 15 against the Tide. Freshman sharp-shooter Sara Potts helped UK pull out of a 13-point deficit against Alabama when she nailed a career-tying four three-pointers in the second half. The Tide held UK leading scorer SeSe Helm to a season-low eight points, snapping a 19-game streak of scoring in double digits.

    LSU Lady Tigers
The Pack the PMAC VI game against Vanderbilt drew an attendance of 8.153, the second largest crowd in school history and the 10th largest crowd in Louisiana history. The loss to Vanderbilt snapped a three-game winning streak. Aiysha Smith recorded her 17th and 18th consecutive double-figure scoring outputs.

    OLE MISS Lady Rebels
Freshman Carletta Brown notched career highs in both points and rebounds versus Georgia. The 5-4 Roxie, Miss., native posted 17 points and five rebounds against the Lady Bulldogs in just her second career start. Senior Sherika Wright set a new career-high in assists with 10 versus Georgia and tied her career-high with six steals against Mississippi State. Wright has 113 assists on the season for an average of 5.7 assists per game. Ole Miss will play back-to-back road games this week with games at Auburn and LSU. The Lady Rebels completed their first homestand of the season after hosting Georgia and Mississippi State last week.

    MISSISSIPPI STATE Lady Bulldogs
At the midway point of the SEC season, Mississippi State has tied its best league start (5-2) in school history set by the 1999-2000 squad that made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Lady Bulldogs won its second overtime game this season against Arkansas Thursday. MSU completed its second-ever sweep of the Lady Rebels with its 21-point margin of victory on Sunday. State swept three games from Mississippi, which included a first-round SEC Tournament win, during that same 1999-2000 campaign. LaToya Thomas recorded her eighth and ninth double-doubles of the season this week. First with 32 points and 10 rebounds vs. Arkansas, then with 29 points and 12 boards at Mississippi. Tan White recorded her sixth and seventh double-doubles of the season this week with 22 points, 11 rebounds vs. Arkansas and 21 points, 11 boards at Mississippi. White had six assists vs. Arkansas and seven at Mississippi. Jennifer Fambrough recorded her first double-double of the season with 17 points and a game-high 14 boards vs. the Lady Razorbacks.

    SOUTH CAROLINA Lady Gamecocks
After a Thursday night off from basketball, the seventh-ranked South Carolina women's basketball team returned to action Sunday with a disappointing loss in Arkansas, 74-46. Suffering its worst shooting night in three years, the Gamecocks connected on only 15-of-57 shots from the field (26.3%) with no USC player reaching double figures. Tatyana Troina led the team with nine points while Petra Ujhelyi grabbed 11 rebounds and made three blocks.

    TENNESSEE Lady Volunteers
The 2001-02 Tennessee Lady Vols will play 18 games versus ranked teams out of a total of 27 regular season opponents. Six other UT opponents have received votes in either the Associated Press or USA TODAY/ESPN top 25 polls. Only three opponents on this season's schedule have not been ranked at all. Furthermore, the Lady Vols will have faced six of the top 10 teams (in seven games) of the current WBCA/Summerville RPI top 10. It's no wonder that the Lady Vols lead the nation in strength of schedule and RPI. The Tennessee Lady Vols have gone over the 100,000 mark in home attendance for the eighth consecutive season with at least five more home games to play. Last season, Tennessee attracted 232,646 patrons to 15 home games.

    VANDERBILT Commodores
Chantelle Anderson and Zuzi Klimesova combined for 52 of Vanderbilt's 64 points in a 64-53 win at LSU. It was the first win in Baton Rouge since the 1995-96 season. VU totaled 25 assists on 28 field goals in the game with Ashley McElhiney totaling eight with just one turnover. McElhiney has moved into seventh place on the VU All-Time Assists List with 408. Chantelle Anderson recorded her third double-double of the season with 28 points and 10 rebounds at LSU. Zuzi Klimesova went 11-12 from the field, including 4-4 in the second half and was 2-2 from the line at LSU. Anderson and Klimesova are both on the Top 5 of the VU All-Time Scoring List - Anderson is fourth with 1723 points followed by Klimesova in fifth place with 1,682 points.

SEC IN 20TH SEASON OF CONFERENCE PLAY
This marks the 20th season of conference play in the SEC. Women's basketball first came under the auspices of the Southeastern Conference for the 1982-83 season. Games played between SEC teams before that time are not counted in the all-time SEC standings, since there was no uniform number of conference games played each season prior to that time.

Since that time, five teams have won the SEC Championship. Tennessee leads with nine titles, while Georgia is close behind with seven. Auburn has won four titles, with Ole Miss and Kentucky each winning one.
