Team Notes

ALABAMA Crimson Tide
Alabama sixth SEC win of the year marked Bama's most league victories since UA won 7 games in the 1998-99 season. The Tide's victory over Ole Miss assured the Tide of its 19th straight home winning season. UA Coach Rick Moody will become the Tide's longest tenured basketball coach when he leads Bama against LSU on Sunday. It will be Moody's 398th career game as Bama's head coach. The Crimson Tide concludes the regular season at #24 Georgia on Thursday before hosting LSU next Sunday in their regular season finale. Shondra Johnson has scored double-figures in 6 of the Tide's last six games and moved up into 7th place on UA's all-time scoring list with her 23 points vs Ole Miss on Sunday.

ARKANSAS Lady Razorbacks
India Lewis sank six three-pointers to lead Arkansas to its largest margin of victory ever against Auburn, 88-65. The win completes a story-book comeback for the Lady Razorbacks who went 1-5 to begin conference play, but have won five of their last six to even their league record at 6-6. A key in the comeback is sophomore Shanna Harmon who has come off the bench for back-to-back season highs against SEC foes, topping out with a career high 14 points and 6 rebounds against Auburn.

AUBURN Tigers
Sophomore forward Le'Coe Willingham has been an ironwoman for Auburn over the past few games. She has played all but 16 minutes over the past seven games, including logging 40 minutes in four of the past six games. During the run, Willingham has scored in double figures in all seven games and has led the team in scoring in five of the last six games and rebounding in six of the last seven. With her team-high 16 points in Sunday's loss at Arkansas, Willingham extended her double digit scoring streak to nine straight games. Senior guard Carol Smith ranks seventh in career three-pointers made with 63 after she connected on two in the game at Arkansas.

FLORIDA Lady Gators
Florida plays its regular-season home finale this week, entertaining red-hot Arkansas on Thursday before traveling to Starkville, Miss., where the Lady Gators battle Mississippi State on Sunday in the last regular season game of the year. Florida enters the week in a three-way tie (with LSU and Mississippi State) for fourth place in the SEC standings. On Feb. 12th, senior Brandi McCain was selected as one of the top 20 finalists for the 2001-02 Naismith Female Collegiate Player of the Year. This is the second consecutive season McCain is a finalist for the prestigious award. Last week McCain topped the 1,500-point plateau for her career and dished her 550th career assist.

    Tournament History
In the history of the SEC Women's Basketball Tournament, six different teams have claimed the conference tournament championship. Only four of those post winning records in the postseason prelude to the "Big Dance."

Perenniel power Tennessee leads the pack with 10 tournament titles (1980, '85, '88, '89, '92, '94, '96, '98, '99, '00), which includes the inaugural championship . Also annual powers, Auburn has four (1981, '87, '90, '97), and Georgia four (1983, '84, '86, '01), while Vanderbilt holds two (1993, '95) to its credit. Kentucky's lone tournament title came in 1982 and LSU won the crown in 1990.

The foursome of Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt combined have held 33 of the 44 spots in the championship. Tennessee and Vanderbilt alternated in taking the title from 1992-96 as the Lady Vols won the title in the even-numbered years and Vanderbilt stole the show in the odd-numbered years.

In 1997, ninth-seeded Auburn became the lowest seed team and only team to play on the first day to survive and win the tournament championship.

UT has won both the regular season and championship titles on six occasions: 1980, 1985, 1994, 1998, 1999 and 2000.

    TIE-BREAKER FORMULA
Teams will be seeded according to their place finish in regular-season league play (winning percentage in the 14-game schedule). Once a team is seeded, it shall remain that same seed throughout the tournament. Ties will be broken in the following manner:

Two-Team Tie: In the following order:

      a. Won-lost results of head-to-head competition between the two teams.
      b. Best winning percentage of the tied teams versus the No. 1 team (and proceeding down through the No. 12 team).

Three-Team Tie: In the following order

      a. Best winning percentage of Conference vs. Conference games among the tied teams.
      b. Best winning percentage of the tied teams versus the No. 1 team (and proceeding down through the No. 12 team).
      c. If two teams still are tied, the Commissioner will flip a coin, and,
      d. If three or more teams still are tied, the Commisssioner will conduct a draw.

SEC IN 20TH SEASON OF CONFERENCE PLAY
This marks the 20th season of conference play in the SEC. Women's basketball first came under the auspices of the Southeastern Conference for the 1982-83 season. Games played between SEC teams before that time are not counted in the all-time SEC standings, since there was no uniform number of conference games played each season prior to that time.

Since that time, five teams have won the SEC Championship. Tennessee leads with nine titles, while Georgia is close behind with seven. Auburn has won four titles, with Ole Miss and Kentucky each winning one.
