Team Notes

ALABAMA Crimson Tide
Alabama improved to 8-0 versus LSU in Tuscaloosa under UA coach Rick Moody with Sunday's win. Senior LaNisha Cartwell became Alabama's 18th member of the 1,000 point club with her 14 pts vs LSU. UA Coach Rick Moody now has the Tide's longest tenure for a basketball coach having coached his 398th career game as Bama's head coach on Sunday. The Tide opens SEC Tournament action against Georgia on Thursday. UA is 1-4 all-time against the Lady Bulldogs in the tournament. Alabama has won 8 of its last 9 opening games at the SEC Tournament and Bama has only lost its opening game five times in the 22 year history of the event.

ARKANSAS Lady Razorbacks
With a 6-2 finish in league play, Arkansas completes its biggest comeback as an SEC member. Along the way, Arkansas went 3-3 against AP ranked teams. One of the keys is The Big Three scorers -- sophomore Shameka Christon and juniors Dana Cherry and India Lewis. All three broke Arkansas' previous record for points scored in a SEC season, set by former all-SEC post Karyn Karlin with 200 points. Christon leads with 224 points, followed by Cherry with 214 and Lewis with 201. The other key is defense shown in the season finale as Arkansas held #23 Georgia to a season-low 45 points with a season-high 33 turnovers.

AUBURN Tigers
Auburn enters the SEC Tournament as the No. 11 seed and will face No. 6 seed Florida in the first round on Thursday. The Tigers are 5-1 against Florida in the SEC Tournament. Carol Smith led the Tigers to an upset victory over the No. 10 Lady Gamecocks with 22 points. Hillman returned to action in the game, the first time she had played in nine games due to a broken bone in her left foot. Auburn's upset victory over 10th-ranked South Carolina on Thursday night marked the 36th time the Tigers have defeated a top 10 team in the schools history and the second straight season. Auburn upset No. 10 LSU last year in Baton Rouge.

FLORIDA Lady Gators
Florida finished the regular season in a three-way tie for fourth place in the SEC and enters the SEC Tournament as the No. 6 seed, playing Auburn in the first round. Senior Brandi McCain has been invited to participate in the 3-point shoot-out at the men's Final Four. Vanessa Hayden remains on pace to set a new NCAA record for average blocked shots in a season by a sophomore. She enters the SEC Tournament averaging 4.48 per game, a pace which leads the nation. The national sophomore record is 4.3 per game, held by Stefanie Kasperski who set the mark in 1988 playing with Oregon.

GEORGIA Lady Bulldogs
Georgia ended the regular-season campaign with a 2-1 record during the final week of action. The Lady Dogs completed SEC play at 6-8 and will be the No. 9 seed in this week's SEC Tournament. The Lady Dogs will face Alabama in the first round. Georgia owns a 4-1 record in SEC Tourney matchups with the Crimson Tide, last winning a 76-72 decision in the semifinals of the 1993 tournament. This season marks only the fourth time the Lady Dogs have finished the regular season with a losing SEC record, joining 1983 (4-5), 1993 (4-7) and 1994 (5-6). The 1983 won the SEC Tourney and later advanced to the NCAA Final Four. The 1993 team became the first squad in league history to reach the SEC Tournament final while playing four straight days.

KENTUCKY Lady Wildcats
Kentucky gave Tennessee all it could handle in the first half, leading at one point by ten, 27-17. The Wildcats tied the score at 42 at the half, but eventually fell to the fourth-ranked Lady Vols, 89-64. All-SEC candidate SeSe Helm scored a team-high 18 points, her sixth straight game in double-figures. The Cats, who will meet Mississippi State and former coach Sharon Fanning in the first round of the SEC Tournament, are 15-21 overall in the tourney. UK has met MSU four times in the tournament and the series is tied at two apiece. The Cats fell to the Lady Bulldogs, 59-54, in regular season action in Lexington.

LSU Lady Tigers
Freshman reserve center Tillie Willie was lost for the remainder of the season when she tore her ACL in practice on Feb. 20. The Lady Tigers are now down to seven active players on the roster. Sophomore Roneeka Hodges recorded her third double-double of the season against Mississippi State as LSU defeated the Lady Bulldogs for the 10th straight time. Junior Aiysha Smith continued her streak of double-figure scoring games to 25 (every game this season) with 18 points against Alabama. She also pulled down 13 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season.

OLE MISS Lady Rebels
Senior Von Kirk had a career night against Tennessee. Kirk scored a career-high 30 points versus the Lady Vols in her last game at Tad Smith Coliseum. The 5-10 forward made a career-high six three-points shots and also grabbed a career high seven steals against UT. Kirk is currently leading the Lady Rebels in scoring with 11.6 points per game. Freshman Amber Watts is currently second on the Ole Miss freshman blocks chart with 50. Eugenia Conner is first on the freshman blocks chart with 55.

MISSISSIPPI STATE Lady Bulldogs
MSU's 8-6 league finish marks only the second time in school history that the Lady Bulldogs have finished above .500 in the SEC. The first time came two years ago when State made it to the SEC Tournament Championship game and to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Jennifer Fambrough made a statement on senior day Sunday when she scored 18 points, her season high vs. a conference team, and grabbed eight boards in 30 minutes after sitting out the last five games because of back surgery. State's record vs. top 25 teams moves to 6-5 after Sunday's win over No. 15 Florida. The 20-point margin of victory was MSU's largest against the Gators since defeating UF by 21 in the first round of the 1988 SEC Tournament.

SOUTH CAROLINA Lady Gamecocks
South Carolina clinched second place in the SEC standings with a 82-58 victory over Mississippi Sunday afternoon. The 10th ranked Gamecocks finished the season in a tie with Vanderbilt for second place but won the tiebreaker after defeating the Commodores earlier in January, 71-52. Playing with a healthy roster for the first time since January 21st, South Carolina had two players in double figures with Shaunzinski Gortman scoring 24 points and Jocelyn Penn contributing 23. USC sank 55.9% of its field goal opportunities and 46.7% from behind the three-point line. The South Carolina defense held Mississippi to only 26.1% from the field.

TENNESSEE Lady Volunteers
UT guard Kara Lawson has had an incredible month of February for the Lady Vols. In eight games, the junior from Alexandria, Va., averaged 20.1 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 2.8 apg, just 1.3 topg and 1.4 spg. Additionally, she connected on 53% of her field goals, 36% three-pointers and 84% from the charity stripe. She also gets the "ironwoman" award for averaging 35.1 minutes per game during that stretch which featured contests versus four ranked teams. With the victory over Kentucky on Feb. 24, Tennessee currently has won 40 consecutive SEC games at home. The last SEC loss at home was to Georgia on Dec. 8, 1996, 94-93 (OT).

VANDERBILT Commodores
Head coach Jim Foster collected his 250th win at Vanderbilt with a 72-54 win over Auburn. He is two victories shy of 500 career wins. VU is 9-3 in television games this season. VU won 10 conference games this season for the highest victory total in school history. The Commodores had won nine SEC games three times - all under Foster. The Commodores tied their home victory total of 16. VU is 16-1 this season. Vanderbilt honored its seniors - Zuzi Klimesova, Jillian Danker and Candice Storey, along with managers Yamisi Fanga Mbourounda and Jackie Munch. VU also honored Auburn's seniors Brandi Hillman and Carol Smith.

SEC IN 20TH SEASON OF CONFERENCE PLAY
This marks the 20th season of conference play in the SEC. Women's basketball first came under the auspices of the Southeastern Conference for the 1982-83 season. Games played between SEC teams before that time are not counted in the all-time SEC standings, since there was no uniform number of conference games played each season prior to that time.

Since that time, five teams have won the SEC Championship. Tennessee leads with nine titles, while Georgia is close behind with seven. Auburn has won four titles, with Ole Miss and Kentucky each winning one.

SEC IN THE POLLS
Since the AP poll began in 1983 and the USA Today/ESPN poll in 1986, the SEC has never failed to place at least four members in each of the final polls.

This season, the SEC has had as many as three teams in the AP and USA Today/ESPN Top 10. During the 1996-97, season five league teams graced the AP Top 10 three times.

As many as seven SEC teams have been ranked in the AP poll, and the USA Today/ESPN poll this season. The record for SEC teams ranked is eight. The league did this twice, in the1995-96 season and again during the1996-97 season.

In terms of rankings, the SEC has the richest history of any conference in the nation, boasting more poll appearances than any other. SEC teams have been ranked in the AP poll for 326 consecutive weeks. League teams have been ranked 2,103 times including 1,160 Top 10 appearances and 586 Top Five appearances.

SEC Tournament Notes

Tournament History
In the history of the SEC Women's Basketball Tournament, six different teams have claimed the conference tournament championship. Only four of those post winning records in the postseason prelude to the "Big Dance." Perenniel power Tennessee leads the pack with 10 tournament titles (1980, '85, '88, '89, '92, '94, '96, '98, '99, '00), which includes the inaugural championship . Also annual powers, Auburn (1981, '87, '90, '97) and Georgia (1983, '84, '86, '01) have four each. While Vanderbilt holds two (1993, '95) to its credit. Kentucky's lone tournament title came in 1982 and LSU won the crown in 1990.

The foursome of Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt combined have held 33 of the 44 spots in the championship. Tennessee and Vanderbilt alternated in taking the title from 1992-96 as the Lady Vols won the title in the even-numbered years and Vanderbilt stole the show in the odd-numbered years.

In 1997, ninth-seeded Auburn became the lowest seed team and only team to play on the first day to survive and win the tournament championship.

UT has won both the regular season and championship titles on six occasions: 1980, 1985, 1994, 1998, 1999 and 2000.

All SEC Tournament Games to be Televised
This marks the fourth consecutive year that all 11 games of the SEC Tournament will be televised. Fox Sports Net South will handle the broadcast of the first round, second round and semifinal games. Comcast Sports Southeast will pick up games from the second and fourth sessions. This marks the fourth year that FSNS has expanded its coverage. ESPN2 will once again televise the championship game live on Sunday evening. Dave Neal and Eli Gold will handle the play-by-play duties for Fox Sports Net South while Van Chancellor will provide color commentary. For the championship game on ESPN2, Michele Tafoya will provide play-by-play with color by Ann Meyers.

Television has been a vital part in the more recent history of the SEC Women's Basketball Tournament as SportSouth broadcasted the 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1995 tournament finals as well as the 1992 and 1993 semifinal games. The 1991 semfinals and finals were aired by SportsChannel America.

The Tie-Breaker
Following is a brief explanation of the tie-breaker system used to determine the seeds for the SEC Tournament.

For a two-team tie: A. Won-lost results of head-to-head competition between the two teams. B. Best winning percentage of the tied teams versus the No. 1 team (and proceeding down through the No. 12 team).

In a three-team tie: A. Best winning percentage of Conference vs. Conference games among the tied teams. B. Best winning percentage of the tied teams versus the No. 1 team (and proceeding down through the No. 12 team). C. If two teams still are tied, the Commissioner will flip a coin, and, D. If three or more teams still are tied, the Commisssioner will conduct a draw.

Once a three-team tie is reduced to two teams, then the two team tie-breaker is in effect.

League Title Doesn't Equal Tourney Title...
If history has been any indicatiQon, the regular-season conference champion does not necessarily have the inside track to the tournament championship.

In the past 15 years (since the regular season title has been awarded), only six conference champions have won the tournament title in the same season. Tennessee has done it four times (1994, 1998, 1999,2000). Georgia did it in 1986 and Auburn followed in 1987.

...But May Mean A Trip To The Final Four
If winning the SEC Tournament title doesn't mean enough, it definately gives foresight into a team's possible success in the NCAA Tournament as eight of the past 14 SEC tournament champions and seven of the past 14 SEC tournament runner-ups have advanced to the Final Four. This statement is probably the truest measure of why the SEC is the nation's premier intercollegiate women's basketball conference. In 2000, Tennessee was co-regular season champion, won the SEC Tournament and went on to play in the National Championship game. In 1999, Georgia used it's outstanding regular season and runner-up performance at the SEC tournament to reach it's fifth Final Four. Tennessee used its performance in winning its eighth tournament title in 1998 to propel to the national championship. Arkansas also reached the Final Four in 1998 after losing in the second round of the conference tournament.

In 1995 and '96 Tennessee and Georgia comprised half of the elite field of four. Vanderbilt danced to the Final Four in 1993, after defeating Georgia in the championship game, as did Alabama in 1994, who suffered a semifinal loss to tournament champion Tennessee.

LSU bounced Tennessee in the 1991 finals but the Lady Vols rebounded to claim their third NCAA title. In back-to-back years, 1988 and 1989, Auburn and Tennesee battled in some classic matchups as the Lady Vols defeated the Tigers in the SEC title game in each season and in the 1989 NCAA championship game.
