Eleven Former SEC Players Taken In WNBA Draft

NEW YORK -- A total of eleven former SEC women's basketball players were taken in the WNBA draft held in New York City on Friday April 19.

South Carolina's Shaunzinski Gortman was taken as the ninth selection in the first round by the Charlotte Sting. The Charlotte Sting later traded Gortman to the Minnesota Lynx for Erin Buescher and Maylana Martin.

Gortman was named All-SEC First Team as well as an AP All-America honorable mention this past season. She finished her career averaging 12.9 points per game, 5.5 rebounds per game and 3.0 assists per game.

Tennessee's Michelle Snow (No. 10 pick by Houston) and Georgia's Tawana McDonald (No. 13 pick by Indiana) rounded out the SEC's first round picks.

The WNBA will tip off its sixth season over Memorial Day weekend as the defending champion Los Angeles Sparks host the New York Liberty on Saturday, May 25 at the STAPLES Center. The nationally televised game will air on NBC at 3 p.m. EDT.
