ARKANSAS Lady'Backs
The University of Arkansas rallied in the 10th inning completing the non-conference series sweep over Southwest Missouri at Lady'Back Yard Wednesday. The Lady'Backs notched a first-game 4-0 shut out victory behind sophomore pitcher Heather Schlichtman and rallied in the 10th inning for a 4-3 win with senior Rachel Talley and freshman Valanna Lyons sharing time on the hill. Earlier in the week, The Lady'Backs played NAIA powerhouse Oklahoma City. Schlichtman got the eight-inning, 2-1, win in the first game while Talley threw a solid game two with nine strikeouts and just two hits through five and a half innings. The game was called when heavy rain blew in resulting in a 0-0 tie. Arkansas returns to conference play with Mississippi State on the weekend in the Lady'Backs final home games of the 2002 season. Arkansas will celebrate Senior Day Sunday prior to the start of the MSU contest honoring seniors Rachel Talley, Danica White, Tiffany Woolley and Andy Wharton.

AUBURN Tigers
Auburn opened this week's play with a 10-4 defeat of Middle Tennessee State. With the game tied after regulation, the international tiebreaker rule was enforced in the top of the eighth inning. Auburn took advantage getting five hits and scoring six runs to storm ahead 10-4 lead. With the win, the Tigers improve to 31-20 overall. Auburn returns to action this weekend, April 27-28, with a three-game SEC series with Kentucky at Jane B. Moore Field. Softball action starts at Noon Saturday with a doubleheader and concludes Sunday with a single game at Noon.

FLORIDA Gators
The Florida softball team (29-30, 9-15 SEC) lost the final home game of the season to South Carolina (35-14, 16-8 SEC) 1-0 at the Florida Softball Stadium. Florida was in eighth place in the SEC going into today's game. The eighth place spot is the last spot that is invited to the SEC Tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn. May 9-12. Florida still has six games remaining to solidify a spot in the tournament. The Gators next game is Thursday, April 25 against Tennessee, the team just below them in the conference, in Knoxville.

GEORGIA Bulldogs
The Georgia Bulldogs (49-12, 17-12 SEC) added two games to its win column with 8-0 and 6-4 victories over Kentucky (21-28, 3-17 SEC) on Wednesday. Nicole Barber stole two bases in the game-one victory, moving to within one steal of tying the all-time NCAA record for consecutive successful stolen bases. She is 57-for-57 on the year in the stolen-base department, a new SEC single-season record, and has 68 consecutive steals. The record is 69 by Laura Crowder of East Carolina (1989-92). The Bulldogs will return to action tomorrow at 4 p.m. to complete its three-game series with the Wildcats. Georgia will look to notch its 50th win of the season. In addition, Barber will look to put her name in the NCAA record books as she needs only one steal to tie the all-time consecutive stolen base record and two to break the record.

KENTUCKY Wildcats
Georgia swept a Southeastern Conference softball doubleheader from Kentucky, 8-0 and 6-4, on Wednesday, April 24 at the Georgia Women's Athletic Complex. The doubleheader sweep moves Georgia to 49-12, 17-12 SEC while the Wildcats drop to 21-28, 3-17 SEC. UGA's Michelle Green pitched a complete game, four-hit shutout for the game one victory while teammate Nicole Urban (4 IP, 5 H, 4 R) won game two to move to 10-1 on the year. The two teams will wrap up the series on Thursday with a 4 p.m. EDT game. UK will then travel to Auburn for a three game series beginning April 27 at Noon

LSU Tigers
Pitchers Britni Sneed and Kristin Schmidt powered the LSU softball team to a sweep of Southern Miss, 1-0 and 8-1, on Wednesday evening at the Southern Miss Softball Complex in Hattiesburg, Miss. With the wins the Tigers, who jumped to No. 3 in the latest NFCA rankings released Wednesday, improve their record to 42-8 this year. LSU has now won 12 consecutive contests. Southern Miss falls to 25-27. The win also marked the 100th victory at LSU for coach Yvette Girouard. Girouard, in her second year at the helm of the Tigers, became the fastest coach to reach 100 wins in school history, doing so in just 119 games. LSU returns to Southeastern Conference action on Saturday when it faces Ole Miss in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. at Oxford, Miss.

OLE MISS Rebels
Ole Miss ended a 22-game SEC road losing streak (dating back to last season) on Sunday, taking the finale of the three-game set at No. 25 Georgia in extra innings, 6-3. It was the Rebels' first victory against a top-25 opponent this season. Freshman Brooke Turner's triple with two outs and the bases loaded provided the game-winner in the eighth. Freshman DeDe Justice homered for the second time in three games for her 11th of the year, tying the UM career record for long balls in only her first season as a Rebel. As a team, Ole Miss boasts at least one home run in each of its last four games and has 27 on the season. The Rebels also improved to 3-0 in extra-inning games in 2002. Ole Miss took one game each from Georgia and Arkansas last week, but has dropped its last four SEC series. The Rebels host No. 5 LSU this weekend in the final home series of the year.

MISSISSIPPI STATE Bulldogs
The Mississippi State softball team (31-24) erupted for nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings combined, then held off a late fifth-inning rally to expel Jacksonville State (32-16) in one hour and 27 minutes with a 10-1 victory Wednesday afternoon at the Mississippi State Softball Field. Kellie Wilkerson, who broke the NCAA single season record with her 13th save of the campaign in the opener against Georgia Tech last week, plated three RBIs and scored a pair of runs on a 2-for-2 showing at the plate, including a pinch-hit double in the third inning. Mississippi State will return to action this weekend as the Bulldogs embark on their last road trip of the regular season, traveling to Fayetteville, Ark., for a crucial three-game set with SEC Western Division foe Arkansas. The two will open up the set with a 12 p.m. Saturday afternoon twinbill and will play the series finale on Sunday at noon.

SOUTH CAROLINA Lady Gamecocks
The Gamecocks went 1-2 against Florida in Gainesville but still hold the lead in the SEC East. Megan Matthews became USC's all-time strikeout leader on Saturday and followed with a no-hitter on Sunday to lead USC to its only victory for the weekend. USC travels to Alabama this weekend for its final SEC Road series of the season. Carolina is 10-4 against the Crimson Tide.

TENNESSEE Lady Vols
After rallying from a 4-0 deficit to take the opener, 9-6, the Lady Vols were blanked two straight times by visiting Auburn, 9-0 (5) and 8-0. Senior Hannah Low was a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI and a career-high two home runs in the first game and sophomore Crystal Bobo picked up the first SEC victory of her career. However, Tennessee would manage just five hits in the next two contests against Kristen Keyes. Following a series in which she hit .375, senior Adrianna Wilson is now batting .374 overall and .385 in league games to lead the Orange in both categories. The Lady Vols have 49 homers this year, three short of the club record set in 1996. UT completes its SEC slate by hosting Florida on Thursday and Friday at Tyson Park. The Lady Vols are 7-14 all-time against the Gators, but are 5-3 versus UF in Knoxville.

AROUND THE SEC SEC 2002 SOFTBALL
Beginnning only its sixth year of existence, SEC softball has made a name for itself across the nation.

The Southeastern Conference qualified four teams for the 2001 NCAA Tournament. LSU, Alabama, South Carolina and Florida all made yet another appearance in the tourney, while Mississippi State barely missed the field, despite being one of only four teams with a winning record in league play. LSU and Alabama both secured No. 1 seeds and both hosted a regional championship, marking the first time the SEC has had two member schools achieve such an honor.

Trailing only the Pac-10, the SEC qualified a record number six teams for the 2000 NCAA Softball Tournament. LSU, Arkansas, Mississippi State, Alabama, Florida and SEC Tournament Champion South Carolina all made the field of 48.

The sport came under the auspices of the Southeastern Conference in the 1996-97 season. Since that time, six different conference teams have made appearances in the NCAA Championship, including three Women's College World Series berths - one by South Carolina in the inaugural season, Alabama in 2000 and LSU in 2001. LSU reached the semifinals in 2001 and finished the season ranked third nationally. In 1999, four teams earned bids to postseason, the second most by any conference.

Six teams (Alabama, Florida, LSU, Mississippi State, South Carolina and Tennessee) have made Top 25 appearances and two teams have climbed into the Top 10 (Alabama and LSU) of the NFCA/USA Today Poll. At least one SEC team has been ranked in the poll each week since the inception of SEC Softball. In 1999 alone, SEC teams made 29 appearances in the poll.

South Carolina is the flagship team of the league with a rich history in softball dating back 26 seasons. The Lady Gamecocks have made nine NCAA Regional and three Women's College World Series appearances.

The 1999 season was the first in which the conference was eligible for an automatic beth to the NCAA Championships.

Below are a few acheivments SEC teams has made in the past four years:

  • 15 NCAA Regional Appearances.
  • Three Women's College World Series Appearance.
  • 30 NCAA Regional Wins.
  • Seven different SEC teams have played in the NCAA Softball Championships.
  • SEC Teams have been ranked in every NFCA/USA Today poll since the inception of SEC softball.
  • SEC teams have made 51 Top 10 appearances in the NFCA/USA Today poll.
  • SEC Teams have won 219 games over Top 25 opponents in the past four years.
  • The SEC has made 18 appearances on FOX Sports Net South, including the 2001 SEC Tournament Championship Game.
