SEC Men's Basketball Roundup - January 21st

South Carolina 70, No. 24 Florida 69

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Zam Fredrick's layup as time expired lifted South Carolina to a 70-69 victory over No. 24 Florida.

The Gamecocks (13-4, 2-2 Southeastern Conference) trailed 67-60 with less than three minutes left. Devan Downey began the comeback with four straight foul shots and his 3-pointer with 26.5 seconds left cut the lead to 69-67.

After Nick Calathes missed a foul shot, Fredrick had the chance to tie the game as he went to the line with 4.7 seconds to go but missed his second attempt.

Chandler Parsons had the chance to ice it at the line for Florida with 3.3 seconds remaining. He, too, missed the foul shot.

Mike Holmes rebounded the miss, and threw a long pass to the streaking Fredrick who laid the ball in as time expired.

The loss ended the 10-game win streak of Florida (16-3, 3-1).

Calathes led Florida with 20 points. However, only two of those came in the final 11 minutes as the Gators watched their lead shrink.

Downey finished with 20 points and Fredrick 15 for South Carolina, which defeated the Gators for the first time since the 2006 regular season.

Florida got back in the national rankings this week -- the SEC's only representative in the top 25 -- due in part to its long win streak.

And it looked as if the Gators did just enough down the stretch to hold off South Carolina and first-year coach Darrin Horn.

Evaldus Baniulis' fourth and final 3 got the Gamecocks within 62-60. But then Chandler Parsons answered with a 3 of his own and Walter Hodge extended the margin with an inside basket.

Calathes looked like he had saved the day with his reverse from beneath the basket with 35.4 seconds to go to make it 69-64.

Then Downey, the SEC's second-leading scorer at 19.6 points a game, shook off a poor shooting night with a floating 3 to set up the crazy final moments.

Fredrick's momentum after the winning bucket carried him into the crowd and his teammates followed.

Baniulis had 12 points, all on 3-pointers.

Parsons had 14 points and nine rebounds for the Gators, who'll head to Vanderbilt on Sunday.

Florida turned the ball over four times in the first five minutes -- most from lazy passes headed right to opposing hands -- as South Carolina opened a 5-point lead.

That was still the Gamecocks' edge after Sam Muldrow's foul shot made it 27-22 with 5:24 remaining.

The Gators ended with 18 turnovers, nearly double the Gamecocks' 10. South Carolina caused many of them, finishing with 11 steals, three each by Downey and Holmes.

LSU 81, Mississippi State 57

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- Marcus Thornton scored 31 points as LSU extended its homecourt winning streak to 17 games with an 81-57 Southeastern Conference victory against Mississippi State on Wednesday night.

The victory enabled the Tigers (15-3, 3-1) to move into a tie with the Bulldogs (13-6, 3-1) for first place in the SEC West. Mississippi State's loss ended a five-game winning streak.

LSU lost most of its 13-point first-half lead in the first couple of minutes after halftime. Then, Thornton took over by scoring 17 points in a four-minute span. Thornton knocked down four 3-pointers as the Tigers outscored Mississippi State 22-7.

Thornton's layup following a steal gave LSU a 60-42 lead, and the Tigers cruised from there.

Tasmin Mitchell was the only other LSU player in double figures with 24 points.

Jarvis Varnado led the Bulldogs with 18 points.

Alabama 76, Ole Miss 73

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) -- Senario Hillman scored Alabama's final four points to seal a 76-73 win over Mississippi on Wednesday night.

Hillman, who finished with 12 points, hit a jumper to extend the Crimson Tide's (12-6, 2-2 Southeastern Conference) lead to 74-71 with 1:32 remaining. After David Huertas' layup pulled the Rebels (10-8, 1-3) back within one point 15 seconds later, both teams went scoreless for the next 1:15.

With 5 seconds remaining, Hillman grabbed a rebound off a missed shot by Ole Miss' Murphy Holloway and hit his two free throws to seal the Crimson Tide win.

Mikhail Torrance led the Tide with 24 points, Alonzo Gee added 15 and JaMychal Green chipped in 12. Torrance was also 5-for-8 from beyond the arc.

Huertas led the Rebels with 26 points, Terrico White added 14 and Holloway scored 11.

Alabama outscored Ole Miss in the paint 36-26.

Kentucky 73, Auburn 64

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) -- Jodie Meeks and Patrick Patterson did it again.

Meeks scored 32 points and Patterson added 21 points and a career-high 18 rebounds to lead sloppy Kentucky to a 73-64 victory over Auburn on Wednesday night.

The stars combined for 10 points during a decisive 12-0 run late in the second half as the Wildcats (15-4, 4-0 Southeastern Conference) overcame 22 turnovers to beat the Tigers (11-7, 1-3) for the 10th straight time.

Perry Stevenson had 12 points and 12 rebounds for Kentucky, which moved into first-place in the SEC after No. 24 Florida and Mississippi State both lost earlier in the day.

DeWayne Reed led Auburn with 22 points and Rasheem Barrett added a career-high 17 for the Tigers, who were outscored 26-2 at the free-throw line.
