Tennessee, LSU Win 2007 SEC Outdoor Titles

    Tuscaloosa, Ala. -- The University of Tennessee men's outdoor track and field team maintained their lead to win the 2007 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, while the LSU women came from behind to claim the SEC title, hosted by the University of Alabama.

    Tennessee's men gained the lead following Saturday's competition and were able to hold on to that lead, winning the meet with 129.5 points. LSU finished second, with 122 points, followed by Arkansas (100), Georgia (78), Florida (75.5), Auburn (74), Ole Miss (65), South Carolina (62), Alabama (47), Kentucky (36) and Mississippi State (30).

    The Tennessee men took the top two spots in the 200 meters. Rubin Williams won the event with a time of 20.60, while Evander Wells finished second with a time of 20.71. Wells also finished third in the 100-meter dash, posting a time of 10.35, while Williams finished fifth. The Tennessee men's 4x100-meter relay team of Matthieu Pritchett, Wells, Kyle Stevenson and Rubin Williams won the event with a time of 38.91.

    LSU's Trindon Holloway won the men's 100-meter dash with a time of 10.08, while Arkansas' J-Mee Samuels finished second with a time of 10.30. Jamaal James and Reuben Twijukye finished first and second respectively in the 800 meters. James posted a 1:47.00, while Twijukye ran a 1:47.11. The LSU men's 4x400-meter relay team of Siraj Williams, Marvin Stevenson, Armanti Hayes and Melville Rogers also claimed an SEC title, with a time of 3:03.62.

    Ole Miss distance runner Barnabas Kirui claimed his third SEC Title of the 2007 Outdoor Championships. Kirui won the men's 5000 meters with a time of 14:06.94, after winning the 10,000 meters on Friday and the 3000-meter steeplechase on Saturday.

    Auburn's Cory Martin claimed his second SEC crown of 2007, with a win in the shot put. Martin recorded a throw of 16.93m (64' 05.00'') to win the event after posting a win in the weight throw and finishing second in the discus. Auburn's Ty Akins won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.62.

    Florida's Calvin Smith won the 400 meters with a time of 45.74. John Richardson of Kentucky claimed the 1500-meter crown with a time of 3:43.02. Georgia's Justin Gaymon won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 49.25 Nkosinza Balumbu of Arkansas won the men's triple jump with a leap of 16.12m (52' 10.75'').

    The LSU women advanced from sixth place following the conclusion of Saturday's events to win the championship with 139.5 points. Arkansas finished second with 110 points, followed by Georgia (106), Tennessee (89), South Carolina (84), Florida (82), Auburn (73.5), Kentucky (42), Ole Miss (39), Alabama (23), Mississippi State (19) and Vanderbilt (12).

    The LSU women took the top two spots in the 800 meters. Freshman LaTavia Thomas won the event with a time of 2:05.07, while Tanya Osbourne finished second with a time of 2:05.64. Three Tigers scored in the women's 100-meter hurdles. Jessica Ohanaja won the event with a time of 13.10, while Nickiesha Wilson finished second, just behind Ohanaja with a time of 13.11. Angel Boyd finished seventh in the event with a time of 13.82. Wilson also won the 400-meter hurdles, with a time of 55.77. LSU's Andrea Linton won the triple jump, with a leap of 13.44m (44' 01.25'').

    Auburn sprinter Kerron Stewart won two individual titles. Stewart won the 100-meter dash finals with a time of 11.10 seconds, and the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.52. LSU's Sherry Fletcher finished second in both events.

    Natasha Hastings of South Carolina won the 400 meters with a time of 50.84. The South Carolina women also claimed SEC Titles in both relays. The Gamecocks' 4x100-meter relay team of Chiquita Martin, Hastings, Faraign Giles and Shalonda Solomon won the event with a time of 43.33. South Carolina's 4x400-meter relay team of Krystal Cantey, Giles, Brandi Cross and Hastings also finished first with a time of 3:28.44. South Carolina's Precious Adkins won the discus throw, with a mark of 51.18m (167' 11'').

    Georgia's Jill Steffens and Sarah Madebach finished first and second, respectively, in the women's 5000 meters. Steffens posted a time of 16:23.80, while Madebach ran a 16:27.04. Georgia's Levern Spencer won the women's high jump with an SEC record leap of 1.86m (6' 01.25''). The Georgia women also took the top two spots in the javelin. Krista Woodward won the event with a mark of 51.61m (169' 04''), while Sigrun Fjeldsted finished second in the event.

    The Arkansas women claimed the top three spots in the pole vault. Jodi Unger won the event with a mark of 4.12m (13' 03''), followed by Stephanie Irwin and Katie Stripling. Arkansas distance runner Dacia Barr posted a 4:14.97 to win the women's 1500 meters.
