SEC FOOTBALL SUNDAY NOTES PACKAGE – Nov. 23, 2009
* - Outside of the teams clinched in the SEC Championship Game, there is just one game separating eight teams in the SEC standings (SEC games only). Using the same teams, there are two games in the overall standings that separate the teams.
* - Tennessee became the 10th SEC team to become bowl eligible with a 31-16 win against Vanderbilt. Montario Hardesty rushed for 171 yards and a touchdown to lead the Vols.
* - Kentucky used two fourth quarter touchdowns and forced three Georgia turnovers in the final stanza as the Wildcats won in Athens, 34-27, for the first time since 1977.
* - Arkansas used five Ryan Mallett touchdown passes, including two to freshman Cobi Hamilton (58 and 64 yards), to defeat Mississippi State, 42-21.
* - Ole Miss withstood a late LSU rally and upset the Tigers, 25-23, in Oxford. The Rebels outgained LSU, 426-290, holding the Tigers to 40 rushing yards.
* - Tim Tebow threw for 215 yards and two scores and added 102 rushing yards and another touchdown in Florida’s 62-3 win against Florida International.
* - Alabama held Chattanooga to 84 total offensive yards and got out to a 35-0 halftime lead in defeating the Mocs, 45-0. Mark Ingram rushed for 102 yards and two scores for the Crimson Tide.
* - Four SEC teams are ranked in this week’s polls. Florida is the top-ranked team in the AP, Harris and USA Today Coaches Poll. Alabama is second in the AP and third in the Harris and USA Today polls. LSU is 17th in the AP and USA Today poll and 16th in Harris and Ole Miss is 20th in the AP poll and 25th in the USA Today and Harris polls. As of press time, the BCS standings have not been released.
* - The SEC currently has a 39-6 non-conference record. The 86.7 winning percentage is tops in the nation. With three non-conference games in the final regular season weekend of games, the SEC needs two wins to equal its highest win total of 41 (2006) in non-conference games.
* - Total attendance at SEC home games reached more than six million this past weekend. In 79 home games, there have been 44 sellouts. The total attendance of 6,006,933 is 97.76 percent capacity of SEC stadiums.
* - Tim Tebow’s record as Florida’s starting quarterback of 33-5 (87.8 percent) is now 4th highest winning percentage for starting signal-callers in SEC history. Tebow also moved into the top spot solo for most touchdowns scored in his career with 54. He had been tied for the top spot with LSU’s Kevin Faulk (53).
* - Miss. State’s Anthony Dixon moved into the SEC career top 10 in rushing yards gained and now has 3,861, which is ninth on the SEC list.
* - Alabama’s Javier Arenas became the SEC’s career leader in punt return touchdowns with seven. He had a 66 yard punt return for a score against Chattanooga.
* - In 2009, the average scoring margin of SEC intra-conference games has been 13.80 points, third among all conferences (Big Ten – 12.36 / ACC – 13.50). Since 2004, the average scoring margin of SEC intra-conference games has been 13.52 points, second among all conferences (ACC – 13.18).
* - Alabama (10-0) and Florida (9-0) are undefeated when scoring first. Ole Miss lead the SEC with 5 TDs scored on games’ opening possession. Arkansas, Florida and Tennessee have scored TDs on four opening possessions this year.
* - SEC defenses are allowing 4.93 yards per play this season, which leads the nation. Big 12 defenses are second at 4.97 and Big Ten are third at 5.13. The SEC has seven of the top 40 teams in total defense (NCAA stats) and seven of the top 40 in scoring defense (NCAA stats).
