CLERMONT, Fla. – On a bright but chilly Sunday morning at the NTC Division I Elite Invitational in Clermont, Fla., No. 16 Tennessee (1-2) got into the win column for the first time in 2010 by racing past No. 10 Oklahoma (2-1), 4-2. The victory marked the third straight in the series for UT against the Sooners, sweeping OU last season in a pair of match-ups at "The Preview" presented by WORTH in Norman and Oklahoma City, Okla. The big blow of Sunday’s game came on the first career grand slam from sophomore third baseman Jessica Spigner. The Santa Clarita, Calif., native drove a 3-1 pitch from OU starter Keilani Ricketts over the wall in deep center as part of a 1-for-3 effort at the dish. Senior first baseman Erinn Webb was 2-for-3, while freshmen Megan Givens and Kat Dotson recorded their initial career base hits as part of Tennessee’s eight-hit offensive output.
MINNEAPOLIS, Min. – Two Arkansas home runs and strong pitching throughout led the Razorbacks to a 4-2 victory over Iowa State on Sunday afternoon at the Metrodome Classic. Shortstop Brittany Griffiths provided a two-run blast while designated player Miranda Dixon added a solo shot for Arkansas (2-3). Eight doubles, two each from Laura Mendes and Lindsay Walker, power Gamecocks to win COLUMBIA, S.C. - The 2010 South Carolina softball team made a statement in its debut, breaking out offensively with 17 hits in an 11-3 win over Coastal Carolina at Beckham Field on Sunday during the abbreviated Palmetto State Showdown. Junior Laura Mendes and senior Lindsay Walker both had two doubles, accounting for half of the Gamecocks' total of eight in the game. Mendes, junior P.J. Fulmer and sophomore Evan Childs all had three hits, while that trio as well as Walker all drove in two runs. Senior Adele Voigt, Mendes and Fulmer all scored a pair of runs. CLERMONT, Fla. – Seventh-ranked Georgia split a pair of games in Dot Richardson's National Collegiate Softball Invitational on Sunday falling to sixth-ranked UCLA, 3-2, but defeating Florida Atlantic, 5-1. By splitting Sunday's games, Georgia finishes its opening weekend of the 2010 season with a 3-1 record. Laura Mendes added two extra base hits and two RBI in the win COLUMBIA, S.C. - Behind a two-run home run by senior Lindsay Walker, South Carolina (2-0) captured a second Sunday win in the Palmetto State Showdown by beating Winthrop, 6-4, in front of 253 fans at Beckham Field. Junior Laura Mendes added a double and a triple with two RBI in the victory, while sophomore Evan Childs scored twice. Seven Gamecocks reached safely via hit, while all nine hitters had at least one during the day's action. AUSTIN, Texas - The No. 18 LSU softball team lost a 2-1 decision to Texas Sunday in the championship game of the Time Warner Texas Invitational at McCombs Field. The Tigers (2-3) dented the scoreboard first in the third inning as Morgan Russell was hit-by-a-pitch with one out.
