Buentello, Klobosits power Auburn to 7-2 victory
AUBURN, Ala. -- Niko Buentello was 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and Gabe Klobosits pitched a career-high 8.0 innings as Auburn baseball defeated Troy 7-2 on Tuesday at Plainsman Park.
"Buentello had a great series at Alabama and continued that tonight using all parts of the field and getting three big RBI," Auburn head coach Butch Thompson said. "We played offense late and had a good night. Iron sharpens iron with our guys. Melvin (Gray) also had a big night with three hits and two runs for us."
Klobosits was dominant over eight innings with on a career-high 102 pitches. He recorded seven strikeouts and no walks to improve to 3-5 on the season.
With the bases loaded, the Tigers (22-26) got on the board in the second inning on a RBI single from Cody Nulph. Auburn went up 2-0 in the third with an RBI from Buentello.
Troy (27-22) cut the lead 2-1 with a RBI single in the fifth, but Buentello answered back with his 10th home run of the season putting Auburn up 3-1 in the bottom half.
The Tigers put the game away scoring four runs in the seventh inning that widened their lead to 7-1. Grier led off with his 10th homer of the season.
Grier and Buentello are the first Auburn players to record 10 or more home runs since 2010.
After back-to-back singles by Gray and Jordan Ebert, Buentello kept the momentum going with an RBI single to left that scored Gray for his 50th RBI of the season.
Gray had three hits and scored two runs. Damon Haecker had two hits.
An RBI single by Jackson Burgreen and a sac fly by Kyler Deese capped Auburn's four-run seventh. Burgreen has reached base in 18-straight games.
The Trojans tacked on a run in the ninth off reliever Gordon Cardenas. TJ Binder and Chase Smartt both had two hits and one RBI for Troy.
Auburn is in action next on Wednesday when it hosts Kennesaw State at 6 pm.
