Tigers upset No. 1 Gators, advance to SEC Championship
STARKVILLE, Miss. --No. 4 seed Auburn Tigers got off to an early lead against No. 1 seed Florida Gators in the SEC Tournament Semifinal and never looked back, upsetting the top-ranked Gators 2-1.
Auburn's Carlee Wallace took a Kelly Barnhill pitch deep to left center field, while facing two outs and down two strikes in the first to put the Tigers up 2-0.
Auburn pitcher Kaylee Carlson started strong, fielding seven of the first nine outs for the Tigers while giving up no hits.
Kelsey Stewart led off the sixth for the Gators with a ball hit back to the pitcher. Carlson's throw got lost in the sun by first baseman Jade Rhodes, allowing Stewart to get on base. Amanda Lorenz followed with a double to left center bringing the go-ahead run to the plate. Kirsti Merritt's line drive was caught by Emily Carosone who stepped on second for the unassisted double play. Tigers got out of the jam and headed to the seventh up 2-0.
The Gators attempted to rally in the seventh as Aleshia Ocasio came to the plate as the tying run with two outs. After working into a full count, Ocasio hit a grounder to a diving Carosone whose flip to first got away from Rhodes, scoring Nicole DeWitt. Chelsea Herndon took the next three pitches for strikes and the Auburn Tigers advance to the SEC Championship for the second straight year.
