KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Tessa Grubbs recorded 19 kills and Brooke Schumacher finished with a career-high 21 digs as the Tennessee Volunteers defeated LSU 3-1 (25-15, 25-27, 26-24, 25-20) on Sunday at Thompson-Boling Arena.

The Vols (16-13, 6-10 SEC) snapped a five-match conference losing streak, out-hitting LSU (9-18, 4-12) .285 to .203.

Freshman setter Sedona Hansen had her 16th double-double of the season with 51 assists and 15 digs. The Vols out-dug the Tigers 60 to 53 in the win.

In the opening set, the Vols rolled away at the midway point, winning 9 of 11 points at a stretch to take a 16-9 lead on a kill by Grubbs. Tennessee closed the set on another streak, taking seven of nine points to seal the set 25-15 on back-to-back kills by Grubbs.

The second set came down to the wire. The Vols erased two of LSU's set points and went ahead 25-24 on a hitting error by the Tigers. LSU answered with three unanswered points to turn the tide and take the second set 27-25.

LSU led the third set 21-17 but the Vols came back to tie the match 23-23 on an LSU service error. Gina Tillis generated a set point for the Tigers with a kill, but the Vols ended the set on a 3-0 run, sealing the third 26-24 on a block by Raina Hembry and Erica Treiber.

The Vols rolled out to a 5-2 lead in the fourth set and never trailed. Tennessee won five of six points at a burst to go up 21-14 on back-to-back aces by Hansen. LSU fought off two match points, but Grubbs put away the match with her 19th kill.

Tennessee starters: Alyssa Andreno, Sedona Hansen, Erica Treiber, Raina Hembry, Bri Holmes, Claudia Coco and libero Brooke Schumacher. Schumacher wore senior Bridgette Villano's No. 8 orange jersey to achieve her career best. Villano had a senior-ending knee injury earlier this season. Schumacher now has two matches this season with at least 20 digs. She had 20 digs ear Villano and Coco were honored during Senior Day festivities before the match. Grubbs' 19 kills, Hansen's 51 assists and Schumacher's 21 digs was the most by the Vols this season. UP NEXT

Tennessee concludes the regular season next week. The Vols host No. 23 Kentucky on Wednesday at 9 p.m. in the home finale at Thompson-Boling Arena. The match will be televised on ESPNU. Tennessee ends the year Saturday at No. 25 Missouri, beginning at 7 p.m. Eastern.
