HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The No. 12 LSU softball team got a seven strikeout performance from Sydney Smith in the circle and came back from a one-run deficit by scoring two runs in the fourth and fifth inning to defeat the Southern Miss Golden Eagles 4-2 Tuesday evening in Hattiesburg.

Smith (5-1) earned the complete game victory and overcame a first-inning solo home run from the Golden Eagles (9-7) by limiting the home side for much of the game, while the offense finally got rolling getting timely hits and USM miscues to go ahead for good. Smith finished the game allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits with 103 pitches tossed.

Bailey Landry led the Tigers (13-3) at the plate going 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Shemiah Sanchez, Sydney Springfield, Constance Quinn and Emily Griggs helped account for the team's six hits on the night. Springfield and Quinn had the RBIs, as Southern Miss committed three errors over the course of the game that allowed LSU runners to score.

USM's Jillian Johnson (3-1) suffered the loss as she allowed four runs, two earned, on six hits with five walks and a strikeout. Lauren Holifeld led the Golden Eagles at the plate going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, coming on that first inning home run.

LSU will be back in action this weekend, hosting the LSU Invitational this Friday-Sunday at Tiger Park. The field features the Tigers, Florida Atlantic, Illinois, Illinois State, Minnesota and Troy.

The Game Turned When... An obstruction call on Southern Miss allowed Sahvanna Jaquish to advance to third with two outs on the board after a sacrifice bunt. On the very next play Sanchez singled up the middle to tie the game, as after a walk to Amber Serrett a Quinn single to right allowed her to score to give LSU the lead.

Torina's Thoughts On the team's performance pulling out the win... "We faced a tough opponent tonight who showed up and gave us a great challenge. It was nice to see our team respond and step up and have some timely hits. That was something that plagued us in the past, but we were lucky to get some timely hits. Then we had Sydney Smith bounce back on the mound and did a nice job."

On the performance of Sydney Smith... "She made a good adjustment from the first batter through the rest of the game. She did a good job of using the strike zone that was given to her and was able to keep them off balance with a lot of different weapons tonight."
