LYNCHBURG, Va. - The No. 5 Lady Vols edged Liberty, 1-0, on Tuesday to break the Lady Flames 28-game win streak at Kamphuis Field at LU Softball Stadium and improve to 23-4 on the season.
Senior Matty Moss earned her eighth win of the year as she threw 5.0 one-hit innings before handing the ball over to Ashley Rogers in the sixth. The freshman from Athens, Tenn., tossed 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit, to pick up the second save of her career.
Offensively, the Lady Vols were led by seniors Jenna Holcomb (2-for-3) and Haley Bearden (1-for-3, 1 RBI).
Both teams were held scoreless until the fourth inning when Tennessee scored the lone run of the game on Bearden's eighth home run of the season.
UT threatened in the third, putting runners on base with two outs as Holcomb singled up the middle before Aubrey Leach reached on a fielding error by Liberty's pitcher. A strikeout ended the frame before UT could put a run on the board.
In the top of the fourth, the Lady Vols scored the only run of the game on a solo homer to center field by Bearden. Ashley Morgan doubled to left field in the next at-bat, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the inning.
Liberty put runners on in the first, fifth and sixth innings thanks to two hits and two Tennessee errors but couldn't push a run across.
Two outs to the right side got UT out of a jam with LU runners on second and third in the first frame while Holcomb made two diving catches in the fifth to leave a Lady Flame stranded on second.
In the sixth inning, Liberty's Amber Bishop singled and advanced to third via a passed ball and wild pitch before Rogers was lights out, throwing back-to-back strikeouts.
No. 5 Tennessee plays North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET. The game will be aired on the ACC Network Extra.
