SEC Player of the Week - Arkansas guard Mason Jones, a 6-foot-5, 200-pound junior from Desoto, Texas, scored a career-high 32 points in the season-opener against Rice. It is the second-most points ever by a Razorback in a season opener. He also had career marks for steals (5), field goals made (12) and attempted (18). His 17 first half points nearly matched that of the Rice team (19). Jones helped Arkansas hold Rice to 8% shooting (2-for-25) from 3-point range, including a streak of 22 consecutive missed from beyond the arc to end the game.
SEC Freshman of the Week - Kentucky guard Tyrese Maxey, a 6-foot-3, 198-pound freshman from Garland, Texas, averaged 17.5 points and four rebounds in wins over No. 1 Michigan State and Eastern Kentucky. Maxey made his college debut with a game-high 26 points in UK's win over top ranked Michigan State. It was the most points for a freshman in a debut in program history and the most points of any UK player against an Associated Press No. 1 ranked team since Jamal Mashburn scored 28 in an overtime loss to Duke in 1992. Against Eastern Kentucky, he scored nine points to go along with three assists and a steal.
