Bev Lewis served the University of Arkansas as a coach and administrator for 33 years after joining the Razorbacks as the head women's cross country and track and field coach in 1981. As a coach, Lewis led the Razorbacks to six top 20 national finishes and guided the program to its first national team ranking, top 10 national finish and conference championship. Lewis then spent 19 years (1989-2007) as the Director of Women's Athletics helping the program earn a national reputation for excellence both in competition and in the classroom. Lewis was at the forefront of creating opportunities for student-athletes, especially those competing in women's sports. During her tenure, Arkansas added women's programs in volleyball, golf, gymnastics and softball. Lewis also played an important role in the combining of the previously independent men's and women's athletic departments into a successful unified program in 2008.
