Throughout the history of men's golf in the Southeastern Conference, the league has provided a strong tradition of excellence on the links. The SEC has won 13 men's golf NCAA crowns in its history with the latest coming in 2015, when LSU captured the men's national championship.
In the final Golfweek poll of the shortened 2020 season, five teams from the SEC found themselves ranked in the Top 25, with six more ranked in the Top 50. The SEC was led individually by Ricky Castillo of Florida, who was second nationally with a 68.32 stroke average. Vanderbilt's John Augenstein was eighth nationally 68.47, while Florida's John Axelsen was No. 8 with a 68.49.
Augenstein was second nationally in the Golfstat adjusted scoring rankings with a 69.76. In the traditional scoring category, Georgia teammates Trent Phillips and Davis Thompson led the SEC in scoring with average scores under par of -1.81 and -1.76 respectively.
Thompson and Augustein were two of three finalists for the prestigious Haskins Award, which recognizes the most outstanding Division I collegiate golfer for the 2019-2020 season as voted on by their fellow players, coaches and the golf media. Augustein, Castillo and Thompson were also chosen as a member of this summer's Arnold Palmer Cup team.
The five individuals from the SEC mentioned above made up half of the 2020 NCAA Division I First Team PING All-America Team.
