Southeastern Conference men's basketball coaches have proven to be leaders on the court and off as they have taken on key leadership roles that affect the game.
South Carolina's Frank Martin was recently named to the newly formed National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Committee on Racial Reconciliation, Missouri's Cuonzo Martin is a member of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Oversight Committee and Tennessee's Rick Barnes is a member of the NCAA Men's Basketball Rules Committee. Kentucky's John Calipari is a member of the NABC Board of Directors along with both Frank Martin and Cuonzo Martin.
Frank Martin was named the chair of the NABC Committee on Racial Reconciliation on June 4. The committee is populated by a collection of coaches and administrators, has been charged with addressing issues related to racial injustice both within intercollegiate athletics and society at large.
Cuonzo Martin has been a member of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Oversight Committee since 2018. This committee ensures that appropriate oversight of men's basketball is maintained, enhances the development and public perception of the sport and make recommendations related to regular-season and postseason men's basketball. They prioritize enhancement of the student-athlete educational experience (academically and athletically), and in doing so, promote student-athletes' personal growth and leadership development.
The Men's Basketball Oversight Committee supervises qualifications and/or selection procedures for the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship; reviews recommendations from the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee and process other issues related to the administration of the championship and will provides direction to the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Rules Committee regarding playing rules.
Rick Barnes is serving on the NCAA Men's Basketball Rules Committee until 2023. This committee surveys coaches, officials, commissioners and athletics administrators for feedback about the game and then creates rules-change proposals that will be approved by the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Oversight Committee.
