ATHENS, Ga. - The 20th-ranked Georgia softball team defeated USC Upstate 4-1 Wednesday evening at Jack Turner Stadium.

Graduate pitcher Alley Cutting (5-2) worked a complete game in the circle, allowing one unearned run on four hits. She struck out six Spartans in the contest.

At the plate, freshman Ellie Armistead tallied two of Georgia's five hits. Sophomore Sara Mosley provided an RBI double and freshman Sydney Chambley knocked a home run Wednesday.

With runners on first and second, Mosley drove in junior Savana Sikes with a double to centerfield in the first inning. Chambley stepped in and blasted her ninth home run, a three-run shot, to put Georgia (27-8) ahead 4-0 in the opening frame.

The Spartans (19-11) pushed a run across on an errant throw in the top of the second to get on the board, 4-1.

The game was sent into a 42-minute rain delay in the second inning but resumed at 7:14 p.m.

Neither team touched home the remainder of the game as the 4-1 tally stood.

The Bulldogs will host 10th-ranked Arkansas this weekend in a three-game series beginning Friday at 6 p.m. at Jack Turner Stadium.

Georgia Head Coach Lu Harris-Champer

On how the team stayed focused during the rain delay...

"I though they did a good job. The rain delay wasn't really long. I thought the grounds crew did a good job, a great job getting the field ready and keeping it dry. And once we came back out, they played some solid defense, and Alley [Cutting] was outstanding in the circle for us when we came back out from the rain delay. I was really proud of her grit and just the way she was spinning her pitches. And then, you know, early in the game it was exciting for Sara Mosley to get a big hit for us, and Sydney Chambley to get a big hit for us. I'm just really proud of the girls for finding a way to get the job done."

On how this win prepares the team for this weekend...

"We just take this game, each game, one win at a time. Upstate, they have a good team, they're young, good process in what they were doing. And this weekend we've got Arkansas, and we're looking forward to playing some great competition. I can't wait to get back out with the team."

Graduate Alley Cutting

On what went well for the team today...

"I thought our defense was great. I was really proud of our offense for scoring first. I threw a couple changeups in there, and I thought that worked well for me."

Freshman Sydney Chambley

On her approach at the plate before her home run...

"For me it was just about winning the middle so we could win as a team. I think we talk about it a lot, just middle middle, and getting our teammates in because they worked hard to get on base. It was my turn to work hard and get them in."
