Faulconer, Johnson nominated for 2021 McWhorter Award

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (April 22, 2021) - Cole Johnson of the Florida men's track & field team and Savanna Faulconer of the Gator women's swimming team have been nominated for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship by the University of Florida.

The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship has been presented by the Southeastern Conference since 1986 to the league's top male and female scholar-athletes.

The Southeastern Conference will name the 2021 recipients of the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship on May 18.

Highlights of Florida's nominees include:

COLE JOHNSON, Florida, Track & Field Major: Finance

  • SEC Academic Honor Roll, 2018, 2019, 2020
  • SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll, 2018
  • Lowered his 400 meters personal record to 46.64 (from 47.98) at Tom Jones Memorial to qualify for the NCAA East Preliminary
  • Ran for Florida's fifth place 4x400 relay team and finished 12th in the 400m (46.83) at SEC Outdoor Championships ... Also competed in the 400m at SEC Indoor Championship
  • Made his 2021 season debut during the South Carolina Invitational where he ran anchor for Florida's 4x300-meter relays team... Competed in the 400 meters during the Tyson Invitational.
  • Competed in one indoor meet in the shortened 2020 season (Razorback Invitational - 400m, 4x400)
  • Competed in 10 meets, including SEC Indoor and Outdoor Championships as a freshman... Ran a 400m season best (48.07) at the Tom Jones Memorial

SAVANNA FAULCONER, Florida, Swimming Major: Microbiology and Cell Science

  • SEC Academic Honor Roll, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020
  • Carries a 3.93 GPA in Microbiology and Cell Science
  • NCAA All-American, 2020
  • Florida Swimming & Diving Most Valuable Player, 2017
  • USA Swimming Olympic Trials Qualifier, 2019
  • Florida swimming & diving team captain, 2019, 2020
  • Completed 96 hours of internship at the Shands Hospital Microbiology Lab, Fall 2020
  •  Involved in numerous community service projects, including Swim America Gainesville, Stomp the Swamp for Autism, Balance 180, Hurricane Irma Debris Cleanup, Trinity United Fall Harvest, Gator Tracks and Climb for Cancer

The SEC provides the league's male and female McWhorter Scholar-Athlete of the Year Post-Graduate Scholarship recipients with a $20,000 post-graduate scholarship. The 26 remaining male and female finalists for the award will also receive a $10,000 post-graduate scholarship.

The award recipients are chosen by a committee of Faculty Athletics Representatives from the 14 SEC institutions and are announced in May.

Last year's McWhorter Award recipients were LSU men's basketball member Skylar Mays and Kentucky swimmer Asia Seidt.
