Grimwood, Martinez nominated for 2021 McWhorter Award

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (April 29, 2021) - Ela Grimwood of the Mississippi State women's golf team and Daniel Martinez of the Bulldog men's golf team have been nominated for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship by Mississippi State University.

The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship has been presented by the Southeastern Conference since 1986 to the league's top male and female scholar-athletes.

The Southeastern Conference will name the 2021 recipients of the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship on May 18.

Highlights of Mississippi State's nominees include:

Major: History and Psychology

  • WGCA Academic All-American, 2017-18, 2018-19
  • SEC Academic Honor Roll, 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20
  • CoSIDA Academic All-District Team, 2019
  • Named to the Mississippi State President's List eight times
  • SEC Community Service Team, 2018-19, 2019-20
  • Completed 50 hours of community service during the 2019-20 academic year
  • Ranks 10th in MSU history in career stroke average (75.52)
  • Recorded four top-20 finishes, including a career-best 11th place finish at the 2018-19 Westbrook Invitational

Daniel Martinez, Mississippi State, Golf
Major: Business Administration

  • SEC Academic Honor Roll, 2019, 2020
  • Qualified and competed at the 119th U.S. Amateur in 2019
  • Competed in the 2019 W.E. Cole Cotton States Invitational where he fired 70 in the second round to make matchplay
  • Finished seventh at the Memorial Amateur Championship in 2019
  • Five-time President's Scholar, encompassing every semester he has been at MSU
  • Participated in MLK Day of Service, 2019

The SEC provides the league's male and female McWhorter Scholar-Athlete of the Year Post-Graduate Scholarship recipients with a $20,000 post-graduate scholarship. The 26 remaining male and female finalists for the award will also receive a $10,000 post-graduate scholarship.

The award recipients are chosen by a committee of Faculty Athletics Representatives from the 14 SEC institutions and are announced in May.

Last year's McWhorter Award recipients were LSU men's basketball member Skylar Mays and Kentucky swimmer Asia Seidt.
