EUGENE, Ore. - LSU junior center fielder Giovanni DiGiacomo roped a 10th-inning single up the middle to give the Tigers a 6-5 victory over Central Connecticut State to stave off elimination in the NCAA Eugene Regional at PK Park on Saturday.
Following a Gavin Dugas hit-by-pitch, Zach Arnold single and Drew Bianco walk, DiGiacomo headed to the plate with the bases loaded. After a lengthy seven-pitch battle, he gave the Tigers a thrilling victory in the bottom of the 10th inning.
Freshman right-hander Garrett Edwards came into the ballgame and had a strong outing giving up no runs on two hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Senior Devin Fontenot entered and pitched an economical 10th inning to earn the win, his fourth of the year. He struck two batters out while facing the minimum.
CCSU reliever Jake Neuman (5-1) carried the loss while pitching 2.1 innings and giving up one run on four hits.
LSU will return to action Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. CT to play the loser of the Oregon-Gonzaga winner's bracket game. CCSU is eliminated from the tournament.
Tomorrow's game will be streamed on ESPN3, and it will broadcast on the LSU Sports Radio Network affiliates.
