Off Script and Off The Wall
Some of the most memorable snapshots from SEC Media Days through the years have been actual snapshots taken away from the crowd that capture the conference's lighter side. That playful tradition continued Monday.
As usual, Florida's Dan Mullen maintained his style rep by rocking a colorful pair of Air Jordans in Gator orange and blue. UF has an apparel deal with the Jordan Brand.
Not to be outdone in the shoe game, LSU coach Ed Orgeron wore a pair of snazzy black leather dress lace-ups. Ross Dellenger of Sports Illustrated reported that, according to Orgeron, the shoes were "made from alligator skin. Fresh off the hide."
Did anyone read that and not flash back to LSU's 37-34 stunner over Florida last December in the sweaty, foggy Swamp? That shoe (toss) game was the latest emotional edition of the spirited cross-division rivalry. Can't wait till the Gators visit the Tigers in Death Valley on Oct. 16 to see who steps up and who gets stepped on this year.
South Carolina's Shane Beamer may have been the only first-year head coach to take the stage Monday, but he and the program's media team stole the show after the fact. They re-created the iconic Media Days photo of smirking former South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier, tie undone, sunglasses on and left thumb up at the drink machine of a local fast food restaurant.
The Gamecocks one-upped the original photo by staging edge rusher Kingsley Enagbare and tight end Nick Muse in the background. Two thumbs up for the fresh family portrait twist.
Beamer, Orgeron and Mullen set the bar high for the week in terms of extracurricular fun and frivolity. Today it'll be up to Georgia's Kirby Smart, Tennessee's Josh Heupel, Kentucky's Mark Stoops and Mississippi's Lane Kiffin to add their own flavor to the festivities.
