The following is one in a series of blogs prepared by the Convention & Visitors Bureaus of the 14 cities that are home to the universities of the Southeastern Conference. These blogs are presented to enhance fans' enjoyment of the rich history and culture of SEC cities across the 11-state footprint of the Conference.

We invite you to make the most out of your time in Lexington by exploring all that our city has to offer--before and after the big game!

Explore the Horse Capital of the World

There are more than 450 horse farms in the region, many of them world-renowned stud farms where legendary Thoroughbred champions are bred and raised. You are, after all, in the Horse Capital of the World! Snap a photo with one of these four-legged champions at a notable farm, learn about prepping a horse for the races, and visit one of the most iconic racetracks in the country. Pro-tip: Be sure to make an appointment or make arrangements through a professional touring company before visiting one of our signature equine attractions.

Tour the Kentucky Bourbon Trail

It wouldn't be a true Kentucky experience without seeing where America's Native Spirit is made. Explore more than 15 heritage and craft bourbon distilleries that surround downtown Lexington while you're here--and you just might leave a bourbon connoisseur. Nearly every tour experience offers a complimentary tasting at the end. Need we say more?! Along the Trail, you'll discover The Distillery District, home to the historic James E. Pepper Distillery, which began making bourbon in 1879. Today, this revitalized piece of Lexington history has become a lively downtown destination with all the food, beverage and entertainment options you could want. This area is guaranteed to be hopping on Game Day! Pro-tip: Make the most of your Bourbon Country experience by doing a little research beforehand.

Get Outside

Few places are as beautiful as Central Kentucky. In fact, one of the best ways to experience all that beauty is to just get in the car and drive in any direction. But if you're looking to get out and explore, the city boasts hundreds of parks, trails, rivers, streams and cliffs to explore-including canoe trips, ziplines, botanical gardens and nature sanctuaries. Pro-tip: Bring your camera! You won't want to miss some of these Instagram-worthy moments.

Eat Up

Farm-to-table. Field-to-fork. Foodie-approved. You've heard it all before. But let's be real, this is Kentucky. We were farm-to-table before farm-to-table was cool. And while we're no stranger to the Southern classics, we go way beyond beaten biscuits and gravy around here. Re-imagined Southern staples coupled with inventive bourbon-infused creations and global influences lend a unique Lexington quality to our cuisine that you'll be hard-pressed to find anywhere else. Pro-tip: Check out our Beyond Grits dining guide, which highlights more than 100 locally owned restaurants!
