MS State scores 20 runs to top Georgia in series finale
ATHENS, Georgia - No. 23 Mississippi State (12-9, 1-2 SEC) cranked out 18 hits, including six for extra bases, to defeat No. 10 Georgia (16-4, 2-1 SEC) by a score of 20-3 in the series finale on Sunday (March 20) at Foley Field.
MSU scored runs in six separate innings, including putting up crooked numbers in the fourth, sixth and eighth innings. State out-hit Georgia, 18-8, on the afternoon and forced the host Bulldogs to use eight pitchers in the game.
For State, Cade Smith (4-0) started and earned the win after allowing three runs and striking out five in six full innings on the mound. Brooks Auger came on in the seventh and struck out two in a pair of scoreless frames, while Jackson Fristoe pitched a scoreless ninth for the Diamond Dawgs.
Four separate Dawgs recorded multi-hit games, including RJ Yeager who was 3-for-6 with a home run, double, five RBIs and two runs scored. Brad Cumbest was 4-for-5 with a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored. Hunter Hines was 1-for-3 with four RBIs after hitting a grand slam, while Kamren James enjoyed a four-hit day. Jess Davis was also 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs.
