Co-Players of the Week: Mississippi State's Florian Broska continued his stellar play to open 2021 this past week, going 3-1 overall. He extended his singles winning streak to seven matches with two more quality wins. On Friday, he ousted TCU's 47th-ranked Luc Fomba 6-4, 6-4 for his second straight top 55 triumph. Sunday, he would battle to give State the lead at 2-1 over Memphis, defeating Jan Pallares 6-1, 6-4, rallying back from a 3-0, two-break deficit in the second set to fuel State's victory over the Tigers. In doubles, he and partner Nicolas Ocana fell in their match to the highly-touted Horned Frogs on court 1 but he rebounded on Sunday, teaming with Gregor Ramskogler for a 6-1 win against Jackson State to clinch the doubles point. Since late October, Broska has won 10 of his last 12 singles matches, eight of them in straight sets.
Tennessee's Giles Hussey put together his most complete week of the dual season in helping lead Tennessee to shutout victories over Duke and NC State. On Friday against Duke, Hussey and doubles partner Mark Wallner rolled past Duke's tandem of Michael Heller and Faris Khan, 6-2 to help UT claim the all-important doubles point. On Sunday against NC State, Hussey and Wallner breezed through their doubles match, knocking off the NC State team of Yannai Barkai and Rafa Izquierdo Luque, 6-2. Hussey and Wallner since falling behind 4-love in their match against Notre Dame have won 18 of their last 22 games played, winning all three of those matches. In singles play, Hussey dominated No. 95 Tadas Babelis, 6-2, 6-3 to increase the UT lead to 3-0. Hussey is currently riding a 10-match win streak in singles play and is a perfect 6-0 in dual play.
Co-Freshman of the Week: South Carolina's Toby Samuel posted first ranked win of his doubles career with 6-1 upset of No. 41 Chopra/Martin of Georgia Tech, playing with Jake Beasley in the No. 2 spot in the lineup He also had a strong performance in his Palmetto Series rivalry debut, rallying from an early deficit to win his singles match 6-3, 6-3 to put the Gamecocks up 2-1. Stretched his singles win streak to three with another straight-set win at Georgia Tech, his team-high tying 11th singles win of the season.
Tennessee's Johannus Monday had yet another outstanding week for the Vols. In singles play, he picked up a pair of wins in UT's shutout victories over Duke and NC State. Against Duke, he knocked of Edu Guell, 6-3, 6-3 on court two to put the Vols on the brink of clinching match point. On Sunday against NC State, Monday rolled past Yannai Barkai, 6-4, 6-4, to clinch match point over the No. 16 Wolfpack. Monday is now 7-1 in dual match singles play and is riding a four-match win streak going into the ITA Indoor National Championships. In doubles, Monday and partner Martim Prata helped UT clinch the doubles point in both matches, with a win over Dukes Guell and Andrew Zhang, 7-5, on Friday and an easy 6-3 dispatching of the 23rd-ranked duo of Alexis Galarneau and Robert Turzak in Sunday's win over NC State. Monday is now also 7-1 in doubles play with Prata during dual play.
