SEC Baseball Weekly Honors - May 3, 2021
Player of the Week: Christian Franklin, Arkansas
Arkansas' Christian Franklin powered the top-ranked Razorbacks to a series win against LSU in Baton Rouge for the first time since 2004, driving in a team-leading 10 runs on the weekend. The outfielder had at least one hit and RBI in all three games of the series, including two multi-hit and two multi-RBI performances. He tallied two hits and five RBI in Friday's series opener, slugging a three-run homer - his 10th of the year - in the Hogs' 7-0 win. Franklin began Saturday's doubleheader with a three-hit, four-RBI effort in the Razorbacks' 17-10 win, helping Arkansas secure its program-record seventh consecutive SEC series win.
Pitcher of the Week: Gunnar Hoglund, Ole Miss
Ole Miss' Gunnar Hoglund returned to start Friday night's series opener vs. South Carolina after missing last week due to arm stiffness, and didn't miss a beat. It took Hoglund just 73 pitches to work six scoreless and set the tone for a 5-1 victory in the series opener. Hoglund picked up the win after 6.0 IP with just one hit allowed, a single that did not amount to a run, and did not walk a batter while racking up nine strikeouts.
Co-Newcomer of the Week: Jordan Beck, Tennessee
Tennessee's Jordan Beck hit .538 in the Vols' series win over Kentucky and finished the week with seven hits and four RBI. Against the Wildcats, Beck had four runs scored, two doubles, a homer and four RBI while slugging .923. He went 2-for-4 with three RBI and set a career high with three runs scored in Thursday's win. His three-run homer in the second inning tied the game at three and jumpstarted a seven-run outburst for the Vols in the frame. Beck set another career high with four hits in Saturday's series finale, including an RBI double that tied the game at one in the second inning.
Co-Newcomer of the Week: Josh Rivera, Florida
Florida's Josh Rivera went 5-for-11 (.455) with one double, three runs, one RBI and two walks in the Gators' series win against Vanderbilt. Rivera went 3-for-4 with two runs to lift Florida to a win in game two of the series. He had a hit and a run scored in the series opener and added a double in the series-clinching win on Sunday. He played errorless defense (1.000 FPCT) across seven defensive chances.
Freshman of the Week: Jacob Gonzalez, Ole Miss
Ole Miss' Jacob Gonzalez was the spark plug for the Rebels in a three-game sweep over South Carolina. Gonzalez led the team with five runs scored, six hits and five RBI this week from his spot atop the Ole Miss lineup. He also tallied a pair of extra base hits, a double and a homer for his sixth long ball of the year. Gonzalez did not strike out once all weekend, reached base nine times, and did not commit an error in the field.
