Seggern, Butler Nominated for 2021 McWhorter Award

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (May 4, 2021) - Matthew Butler of the Tennessee football team and Chelsea Seggern of the Volunteer softball team have been nominated for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship by the University of Missouri.

The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship has been presented by the Southeastern Conference since 1986 to the league's top male and female scholar-athletes.

The Southeastern Conference will name the 2021 recipients of the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship in mid-May.

Highlights of Tennessee's nominees include:

MATTHEW BUTLER, Tennessee, Football Major: Political Science

  •  NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient, 2021
  • Became the seventh Vol football student-athlete to receive the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship dating back to 1971, joining the likes of Peyton Manning (1997) and Mike Mauck (1977)
  •  Four-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020
  •  Earned his undergraduate degree in political science in December 2020, maintaining a 3.63 GPA
  •  Member of the 2018-19 VOLeaders Academy where he had the opportunity to visit Rwanda
  •  Aspires to go into criminal justice following his football career
  • CoSIDA Academic All-District 3 First Team, 2019
  • Elected to return for the 2021 season and will be the leader of the Tennessee defensive line and a member of the team's leadership council
  • Played in 40 career games with 14 starts, accumulating 105 total tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks
  • Finished the 2020 season with 43 tackles - fifth-most on the team - and had three tackles for loss and two sacks in 10 starts at defensive end
  • Posted five or more tackles five times during the 2020 season
